Does anybody know (I'm sure you do) if 109 front springs are the same for petrol and diesel on a military chassis or are the petrol ones lighter as per other series 3's.

As far as I know they are the same as their civvy counterparts but with extended spring shackles.

Hi.
I have a 1984 109 FFR and I would like to lower the rear suspension about 4 inches. Is this possible ?. The civies seem to be lower in the rear.

If yours has the extended spring shackles fitted you could remove them and fit standard ones in their place, but you'd have to remove/replace the front ones as well otherwise it would upset the geometry of the vehicle.

537685 for the rear, 90577721 for the front. It'll lower it by about 1½"

Copy and paste the numbers into Paddocks or Craddocks website, they are cheap enough.

Will lowering the suspension have any adverse effects on the steering and handling.

Two reasons mainly,
1. I am over 70 yrs and every inch counts. Gone past off-roading.
2. My Lab and Husky are not far behind me in dog years and while I have lowered the tail gate for them, however an extra inch or two lower would also benefit them.
Comes with age, unfortunately.

Can understand that.
It would be a lot easier though to get some kind of sidesteps for yourself and a ramp for the dogs.
My 15 year old sheep dog has to be lifted in now, like you say comes with age.....

Or fit 205 tyres, whilst they are 'wrong' and might not look right they will lower the vehicle by approx 1.5"
fitting sidestep would be the best way ahead imho.

To lower a MOD chassis to civy spec would entail cutting off the front spring mounts (F&R) so it is not just a nut & bolt job as with the hangers.
