Cheers for that lot daft, have had the whole thing in bits (except stripping the pump itself) and it wont run. I'm assuming it worn out as per the second link. I cant be arsed to go through all that hassle to repair it, so will look for a new one.

I think Chaser has a good point about buying second hand, unless the price is very right

Microcat only lists the intank sender unit and remote (rear wheel arch) pump for the car. Dont help much but about right for Land Rover I suppose

The in-tank sender unit in microcat is the pump. If you click on item 2 for the filter as well as the unit, on there they call it a pump! They just have an odd way of updating things. (or not)

Problem update:

Well I fitted a new in tank pump last night and the Hippo lives again. I managed to aquire a brand new unit for £150 which didn't seem too bad considering some of the prices I've seen.


When lookin into the tank I could see some traces of the slime which had clogged the pump inlet filter originally and have tried to remove as much as possible, given the fact there is nearly half a tank of diseasel in there.

For anyone mechanically inclined who has an early TD4 hippo with the intank pump unit, I would recommend taking it out, removing the lower plastic cover (4 clips) and checking the condition of the inlet filter. I'm sure the unit that failed was mainly due to the clogged filter causing the pump to work harder than normal.

Removing the pump is pretty straight forward, although getting it back in was a little trickier owing to getting the seal to sit back in correctly.

This inspection will certainly become part of my routine maintenance in the future.

do i have a pump like that in my '98 2ldi,i could remove the crap from the boot (hairdriers'n'such)to check mine?ill consult with my haynes in the meantime.

Exactly, however in the case of my failed pump, the filter was totally covered the stuff, to the point wher yu could no longer see it.

I'm sure this must be the root cause of a lot of premature pump failures.

Is it worth flushing the tank?
Are there any drains?
Is it worth fitting one?

I think so. In any case pump or not there is still a pick up that will block if there is this kind of crap in there.

As MHM is suggesting, it seems to be worthwhile checking and if necessary cleaning the tank particularly on vehicles of reasonably high mileage. Pumps commonly fail at around 80k

When lookin for a replacement pump, i found lots of different part numbers quoted so there must be a lot of different applications including the 1.8 kettle. I'm assuming (possibly wrongly) that its just the diseasels that suffer from this.

And just for info my pump failed at 56K miles on a 52 plate car, probably one of the last with this system.

im sort of lucky,ive got a spare pump off the old engine along with a few other anciliaries.Im going to check mine as soon as i get the back cleaned out,might even do it tonight,or not.
