ah ****in wish , i did enquire if i got a discount fer a couple as i kno a few people after one, but they dint seem interested,

hold yer 'osses si, thers a guy gerrin back to me from bolton way, says he's the cheapist in town fer galvo's , makes yer wonder, will see

I was more thinking how this would develop when the hammer came out, I saw a 200,000 mile 200tdi go for £1500 recently and it was a total dog.

You have to decide what is available and if you are happy with the price.

I bought mine as a project and it was very very clean for the year and paid little for it as I had to rebuilt the gearbox.

It will boil down to how much you can do yourself and how bad the current chassis is. Price up the cost of getting it patched up v a galvanised chassis-could you swap it yourself? Plus how long do you intend to keep it

i think a chasis swap may be to big a job for me? Ill get a hammer and have a bash at the chasis today and take snaps of areas that need attension!

hey up guys, im a greatful by the way for your help and advice. It's great this forum! honesty from impartial people is worth its salt.

Ok so I got my "normal" hammer and I wacked everything, chasis related. Yeah I found another hole, and here are the snaps. The main struts, long bits are sound and they make that tiny sound, which I read is good times right.

I have taken picture of area and then zoomed in to make crystal clear where the area in question is ;-)

a closre look, but its only rounded (with what looks like a dougnut), not caved in properly and I did hit it alot. slightly of centre to left

and the cross member after I hit it with the hammer and played a little to brake lose stuff away

maybe a little clearer, same place (that black dot aint a hole, but hmm someting els)

so what do ya think guys? I know the area looks really rust in all pictures, but I gather thats kinda normal, maybe. its a 1991 afterall.

looks ok fer its age, just needs the wire wheel over it in the grinder then a few plates welded on, nothing to worry about, mines just the same,

a woundt be doing that :), i bet the black goo is all that's holding it together

reckon that chassis's lost lots of thickness from the inside out

oh alright, so dont bother replacing anything then? was I painting a bad picture of me chasis?

is welding pretty simple? Im going to buy one and go on a course, I think it be cheaper and a skill learnt at the same time

Sean is you hating the black goo stuff? what an earth is it anyhows?

nah trucky is right - peel and reveal, but as i said before i think there'll be a lot of little holes along with in places very thin sections as that chassis looks like it's had a hard life with very little maintenance.

get yourself over to MIG Welding - The DIY Guide

and their forum at MIG Welding Forum

Have a good read, then buy a tidy MIG, get some 3mm plate and have a play - as long as you can read and learn from your mistakes I doubt if a course is really needed ?

that goo is just Waxoyl, kinda a rust prevention treatment - that's been badly and only partially applied to your chassis - ideally it's the inside of the chassis that should be coated as that's where they start rotting from. So even if there's no external sign of damage, due to internal corrosion you will get metal thinning and a weak structure.

The goo is often used to cover up bad welds, rot and other nasties to try and give the impression the chassis is solid.

they do a course on using a grinder also, and I can do that :) £80 a day!! mistakes will be made, but I can learn from em, thats the skill right!

this is a tip i learned from a car restorer, make an inspection lamp, tis prob as simple as a small bulb and holder on a long bit of wire 6ft ish, poke it down yer chassis at night and yer will soon see the holes, pin holes cracks etc, :)

truck sounds like a good idea. I can see you could enter the chasis from bumper point, but where else could you get ya inspection light into?

impressive truck! from a a grinder or from welding your thumb?

just been reading that link from sean and stuff. seems I need a 150amp atleast to weld the chasis, as it thick stuff on landies.

here is one, but it goes up to 150amp, so might not cut it? this be the cheapest that fits spec from machine mart http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/151te-turbo-mig-welder

what do you guys have or do you just get mates or garage to sort weld issues?

me mates thumb, were a 1mm cuttin disc., :D:D hahaha

the ideal thing with the light, is if/ when yer choppin holes to do the welding , just poke it down in the dark , yerl soon see the holes, better if the back x-member is off ;)

even a christmas tree light, with a bit of cable taped to the rod, then wire it to yer battery on crock clips, only seems to work at night or yer dont see the smaller holes :)
