i havent had my defnder long but the whel bearing went the other day so i replaced it.
now when i get to about 35 and only while accelerating it shudders when staying at a constand speed it is fine and when slowing down it shudders verry sligtly,
would this happen if i have tightened the bearing up to much or could this be anything else?

ok cheers i will change them, is there not any chance that the bearing could be over tightened cuz im worried about what it could do, it has only been since i changed the bearing

When ye changed the bearings, did the hub move quite freely when ye tightened it all up or was it really stiff?

it did seem a little stiff, but it did spin. i tightened it fully and then backed it off a bit as advised before.

And ye packed the bearin's wi' loads o' grease?
How does it feel on the road... is the steerin' a bit wobbly?
Chances are it could be the propshaft uj's.
Dunno if ye're good wi' the spanners or not, so dunno if this'll help ye or not...

used s**t loads of grease, it does feel a bit wobbly and more uncontrollable than usual, and pulls atiny bit to the left, im not too bad with my tools as i used to be a mechanic, just landys seem to show different symptoms to some things, and i manager to never work on a land rover before i baught one, i just do enough mechanics to get my own and my familys motors sorted now that im a welder.

Ye never mentioned which wheel bearin', was it the front or rear and did ye only do one side? Normaly as a rule when it comes tae anything to do with bearin's or whatever, ah personally do the other side.
Ah presume it's the 200tdi ye're talkin' about. If it was the rear ah take it ye readjusted the drum brakes and (if just one side) nipped up the other sides bearin's.
If it was the front and ye've still got a bit of movement, it might be down to the preloads or swivel bearin's.
Just a thought, but while ye're under the motor anyways it might be an idea to check all the bushes.
Sorry fur all the questions, but just tryin' tae narrow things down a bit

its the front passenger side i could only get that side done due to funds, it was a straight deisel but been converted to a 200tdi disco engine. what do u mean by preloads? i do need an a frame bush and the panhard rod bushes to be done but my mate who works for a landy place said it just doesent seem like the panhard rod bush when he drove it, even though it does need to be done.

'Basically' the preloads are set by shims that fit under a pin on top of the swivel housin' under the brake pipe mount.
Here's a couple o' photies..

Ye'll need tae bugger about with the shims... remove a thin one to start with and check the preload. Ye'll need to remove the drag link ball joint and the track rod ball joint first and use a set of fishermans scales or summit. Hook the scales on the track rod eye and see what kin of poundage ye're gettin' when ye pull it steadily. Ah set mines about 12 - 14 lbs. It's a lot of fannyin' about but worth it. Ah know when ah went to change me swivel balls, the bottom bearin' was shagged and the top railko bush wasn't much better (might be summit to ask yer landrover bloke )
Here's a photie where the bottom bearin' is..

Try and get yersel' a decent manual ( not haynes, but will do to get on with) or download one (there's summit in the Common Faults & Questions section).
If yer bushes are needin' doin' then get them done as soon as! Anything that affects the steerin' is bad... but ah shouldn't need tae tell ye that as you were a mechanic

i had overtightened my bearings, have sorted that now but i still have the blody vibration, going to check the preset thing tomoz after work, if not i will check everything else grrr cheers for the photos they are a big help i did some reading up about setting it too
