Engine choice between 200 and 300 makes no difference just get a good one. The other things? Have a good read through this section it's all here. I'd advise setting aside a couple of days.

Nope. 300's are good to, but early ones suffered from timing chain probs.
Also check front and sides for rust.

So you would advise anyone to steer clear of 300 tdi engines?
no there are differences that make the 200 generally better....
later 300 were ok.
You can fit a chain to the 200 but the developement isnt quite right yet and they aint quite right.
When done i will be retro fitting my 200 with a chain.
yer gonna have a long wait for that chain - it's been around at least 15 years, it wasn't right from day one and it's no better today
am sure you won't but when you get a second free could you explain to me how the 200 is generally "better" please

The 300tdi is the way to go. Its quieter, more refined and it looks better inside and out. The parts are easier to get and its easier to find a good one. Seen some really smart ones around for under 1200 quid. I paid 1000 for a P reg and its been fantastic in the 6 months ive had it. Make sure it been serviced regularly and double check for rust and under body damage, take it for a very long test drive and get it up to temp etc. Avoid models with sunroofs (i went for a low spec model) and you will be fine.

Yes i read the tiltle!! Looks to me like the guys after buying a disco. Not just an engine!! I was explaining why the 300tdi is better. Im sure he will understand, even if you struggled to.

Don't know too much about the differences between the engines / models, but...
I bought a 300TDi about a year ago and the head gasket failed almost immediately. There was no way of telling when I bought it, apart from the heater not working. So get it up to temp and if its not blowing hot air steer clear or expect to have to change the head gasket - took me about 8 hours.
And check the boot floor and inner wings for rust. And chassis rails.
Oh, and a replacement clutch ain't cheap!
