Our V8 warms up pretty quickly, and we have an LPG vapouriser in the heater circuit as well, might be worth changing the thermostat, and also check water level.

its a diesel, so it will take longer, its just the way they are......
Which is why a webasto was an option to preheat the coolant quicker.
A radd muff would make a big diff in cold weather, I would like one to, but know one makes em for the Disco 2 unfortunately

You could make one out of tin foil like they do in Slovakia and the Czech republic......

I'd do the thermostat first if it's not been done for years.
As Urban Panzer said, it's diesel so will take longer to heat up.
Leaving the heat dial on cold till the engine has warmed a bit will help it warm quicker.
Someone I know with an old diesel golf reckons that by drawing more current from the engine will make it warm quicker - like turning the heated rear window and lights on. I personally think this is bollox but never actually tested the theory!

Where is the thermostat located and how much does a new one cost? I'm wondering if this is a fault with mine as I've never seen the temp gauge rise even close to half way. If I push the engine hard and drive with a heavy right foot the most it'll ever go is about 1/4 of the scale.

In theory the harder you drive a TD5 the cooler it will run. The bypass valve that allows coolant to circulate (irrespective of the temperature) is opened at upwards of 1500rpm. If I remember correctly the discovery thermostat is on the drivers side of the radiator halfway down. The thermostat on the defender is on the passenger side halfway down. They cost 15 quid.
