i bought a defender radio cassette to go in my series 3

i have the 4 digit code, i have it powered up,

the radio is asking for the code but when you press the numbers nothing happens

is there some other buttons imust press first

oily battery, battery charger, soldering iron, wires on the kitchen table , , you aint seen my wife, scary and due home in an hour thats urgent
