So to evaluate....................
It wasn't:
low on compression,
It wasn't:
a sticking valve.

Turned out alot better than I was expecting to be honest LOL.
Aha ..... this old Landy has a British Leyland emission control valve doo-dah, that feeds crankcase fumes to BELOW the carb, or sometimes to a stup pipe ON the carb but below the butterfly valve..
My bet is that this engine USED TO HAVE, but DOES NOT NOW HAVE, the fumes control device fitted to the top of the rocker cover, or if it does have it that it is buggered or jammed wide open.
Quite simply far too much AIR is passing up through the BREATHER system, along with OIL vapour and droplets and crappy fumes.
One immediate solution is to feed the breather pipe into the air flow BEFORE the carb (above the carb), instead of AFTER it as at present. Whatever, you MUST vent those fumes away from the engine. MUST .... OK ??? Or else ....
You could have a look at the breather thing, and if is the right one, clean it properly.
As I recall it should look like flat-topped mushroom, about three inches across, with an inlet pipe stub from the rocker cover like the stem, and a black hose to the carb or manifold.
I think in most of them, but not all, the flat top unclips for access to clean them. Take care to put it back the right way!

Can you enlighten me a bit more on this fumes control device, at present prior to me removing it and blanking it off, there was a pipe running from half way down oil filler tube up to the Emission control Valve (PVC) and a pipe coming from other end of PCV to just under carb. There was also a pipe coming from top of rocker cover cap which connected to the air feed pipe which connects to top of carb.
It currently has a K&N air filter fitted so the pipe from rocker cover is just lose.
My plan was to just leave it blanked off, and run a pipe from oil filler tube to a t-piece connected to rocker cover pipe to one of them small breather filters. Whats your thoughts on this?

I had the same problem with my game, disconnected the vacum assit and everything ran great. It run better with the vacum assit disconnected

You must let the engine breath. By this I mean you must allow any crankcase pressure to vent itself otherwise you build up crankcase pressure and then oil will start to leak from every possible location. It would be desirable to gently "suck out" the crankcase. This also helps prevent oil leaks.
You need to block off the pipe leading to the inlet manifold. Your bolt method might look crude but it sounds like it does the job fine.
In the past I have just used the small pipe coming out of the top of the rocker cover filler and ran that into the filtered air leading to the carburettor. In your case using a non std inlet hose/filter you should really find a way of putting that pipe into your new system.
It should be noted that earlier models allowed air to pass into and out of the engine and vented to atmosphere only. The only problem with this is an oil smell can sometimes cause problems in the engine bay.
The valve end of your system/filler tube end can be blocked off or as in the case of early V8s a small filter can be used.
My plan was to just leave it blanked off, and run a pipe from oil filler tube to a t-piece connected to rocker cover pipe to one of them small breather filters. Whats your thoughts on this?
You can do this and in my opinion it would be fine. I should say however that landrover decided that the engine should allow fresh air into the crankcase and use this air flow to clean out the fumes on the earlier models. To emulate this system, allow filtered fresh air to enter the filler tube and "clean out" the fumes as it is gently sucked out the rocker cover and into the top of the carb. This should also help with condensation removal inside the engine.(Stop the white gunge from appearing)

As far as vacuum is concerned ie the vacuum system controlling the advance/retard in the distributor. Yes you can block this off. However you are throwing away fuel economy at part throttle cruise. IE anytime you are not accelerating hard! If your car really does run better with this disconnected you have other problems to solve which are also sucking up fuel and costing power and money.
