I have to change the engine on my wifes Freelander 2.0 L series oil burner and was looking for some advice on how to do it as I can't find nothing in the Rave manual about removing it (They must be so good they never need to be removed !! ).
It's being changes as it decided to go pop (long story involving police, fire engine, 2 mile traffic jam etc etc) with a second hand unit

It's coming out the top as I've managed to procure myself some scaffold and a Pratt & Whitney block 'n' tackle for jet engines.

I appreciate that you now have the gear for out the top, but according to numerous sources on here (never had to do it meself), it is upteen times better out the bottom. there is a thread on here (somewhere) about how to drop the engine with nothing but a set of wheel ramps, some pallets and a couple of trolley jacks.

just hope I never have to do it !

Yep the haynes manual does cover l-series engine removal.

Damn it. I hate Haynes manuals. Another £18 I don't want to spend.

I don't really have the equipement to get the engine out from underneath. I buggered my trolley jack when I changed the IRD and really don't trust it any more.

Well, what else do you want us to say. How to remove the engine. Get the manual. Don't want to and don't want to do the job the way everyone else believes it should be done. Don't have the kit.... Sounds like a good way to bugger the job entirely. Not sure how we can help you.

I changed my engine with not much more than a good set of spanners,lots of blocks of wood and the oe jack.Im a chippy not a mechanic but i could not have completed the task without the haynes manual.
I wont try to explain how to do it,but once youv'e got the drive shafts off and ready to remove engine lower the body as low as she'll go put blocks of wood under engine undo all mountings and lift evenly using wood as axel stands till you clear the engine.
Even if i had an engine hoist and all the gear I think id still do it this way.

You can remove the inner cv cups with a big flat screw driver or 2,levering against the ird.

alternatively, take the vehicle to a pay and play, and roll it on the roof, then taking it out the bottom will be like taking out the top.

If the £18 is really too much for you then maybe try to pick up a secondhand manual off ebay................................................
