This is by no means a proper answer, but. I was always told not to put wheels designed for a rear wheel drive car on a front wheel drive and vice versa. Possibly true for a rear wheel drive to 4x4. As the wheels are design for specific power/weight setups.
Try doing as suggested by Red.
You could also ask at places like BMW stealers, Halfords, ATS, **** fit, etc. Theres also a reputable company called Elite. they should be able to tell you.
Another thing you will have to consider is the size of the rims. Too small and they will not clear the brakes. Oh, and the hub center.

If you want Bimmer wheels, you're probably best off looking for some X5 ones which should be a direct fit and cope with the weight. Otherwise the suggestion of somemore research on matching load values is the best route; however unless they really meet the same specs they might hold up on road, but would be likely to fail under any pressure off road.

I've not heard this one before...the escort boys were always swapping wheels between Mk2's and 3's. If you think about it the spare which is the same could be used front or rear, driven or not and has to hold up.
That is of course assuming offset etc. are suitable.

When it is recommended to do a tyre rotation the wheels and tyres get rotated front to back and re-balanced. I've not yet seen a fitter remove the tyres from the rims in order to rotate the fitment.
