so what would his ratship suggest for wheni have to tow broken down vans at work? i have a pug partner hdi work van and its the most powerful one on the fleet, i normally have to tow either lower spec partners or cleo vans, i have a rope at the moment but no-one at work knows ho to be towed (the fookers either anchor up hard or not at all ripping the arse end of my van sideways)

If an Aframe is illegal it is equally as illegal as a rope, bar, dolly and a spec lift.
Personally I use strops/rope, straight bars, A frame, Dolly wheels, Specs, Flat beds and Hi-abs and have no reservations about using any of em. Plod and VOSA are the ones that operate with umpteen different sets of made up rules.
If you are towing numptys with no idea A fames are the way to go. Even on a bar the person being towed can fook up when they swing out around you cos they feel like it. Most modern cars have screw in tow eyes too. This means that they like sheering off if they are pulled on too much of an angle. Not good for when towing on a bar or rope.

Rac and greenflag are better. AA wont recover you after an accident.
Cor....disappear for a few hours to do a cross-country trip with my RR tugging the Smartie on an A frame and just look at all the fuss and confusion the good ol' A frame debate generates!! See, I told y'll DON'T GO THERE!!!!
Our A frame IS a braked one, so even though Smartie is over 750kg, it is arguably legal under current trailer law. Its a cable system, although there is an electronic system called Brake Buddy available as well, expensive. The trip to Norfolk was entirely uneventful, passed loads of Plod and they were completely disinterested in us. The RR didn't miss a beat, bless 'er, the fuel consumption despite the Smartie being behind at a chunky 900kg or so, was 18.4MPG. I think that's fantastic for a 4.6 towing. We also happen to have a Brian James Micro Max car trailer, designed for the Smart, it tows really nicely, but is a bl***dy nuisance when you reach the other side - where to store it away from the pikeys and thieving types? Space to store it? The A frame is fantastic - ours was made for our Smart by Towtal, who have loads of info, letters from VOSA etc etc and thousands of satified customers, NONE OF WHOM HAS BEEN PROSECUTED IN THE UK FOR USING AN A FRAME. Not to say that the law won't change or be clarified at some stage though!!!!
I think we can all agree that current trailer and towing law as it stands, is illogical, confused, and a mess, as most other things the government is in charge of. Thousands of motorhome owners use A frames - if you check the forums, most people have problems storing trailers and when you arrive at most caravan sites, there is just no space for them. Our driveway is a nightmare - its about a 1:3 slope!! So managing a trailer is really difficult - we even tried a caravan mover, but they aren't designed for such steep slopes either. :doh:
Until then, well, its very handy to be able to take a little second car if I'm on a contract somewhere and my partner has travelled down with me - beats driving down separately!!! And the A frame may as well get some use other than the odd outing with the motorhome!!!
