Hi, I have a 1982 90 defender, but was told when I purchased that the rear axle had been replaced with one from a range rover, because it had disc brakes. I have had to dress the stub axles on both sides as oil was seeping past the oil seal (vent pipes have been cleaned, so no pressure build up). This has fixed the problem on one side, but not the other which was the worst of the two. I need to buy a new or secondhand stub axle, but I am struggling to identify the part number (of the axle or the stub axle). There are no part numbers on the axle itself - I have looked in all the usual places. What I can say is that the stub axle is supported by an inner and an outer bearing, with 1 oil seal. I have seen pictures of stub axles but they all show a semi round hole on the edge of the outer flange, which mine does not have. I believe this is for ABS, which does not apply. Anybody happen to know the origins of the rear axle and the part number for the stub axle? I genuinely believe it is from a r/r.

Thanks in advance.

As far as I'm aware, there's only two variants of stub-axle, ABS and Non-ABS.
But, my advice is look for a second hand axle.
New stubs when I had to buy one were pretty exhorbitant, and I ended up buying second hand, and luckily turned one up for sensible money; but given you've 'dressed' the other stub, I wouldn't expect it to last well..... reason I hads to change stubbie on mine....... within 2K miles.
Complete axle shouldn't set you back much more than £100, and you can get a fair chunk of that back for the half shafts and diff, if you dont want to keep them for spares.
Might even still have the brake calipers on it, if you're lucky, and again, they should fetch £30 or so on E-bay.... might even get your stubbies for free if you play it right!
