hi guys hopefully u can help me out here as i am wanting to take my truck to strata next weekend.!!

heres the problem, when i first start the car, all seems fine, if i rev the engine up it revs %100 perfect. when the revs get to idle speed the engine tries to stall.

also when pulling out of junctions there is a delayed reaction in the revs, i put the foot down, then a few seconds later the revs start to pic up.

also when going up hills in low box or high, if i come to a stop the same happens then, but once the revs are up and u engage gear it runs fine, any ideas anyone ??
 
aup sam, have you blanked your EGR? me disco is miles better at pulling away from junctions now and dosent do the dreadful 1.5 sec lag thing, if i rev mine in neutral from idle upto 3,000RPM the let off the pedal mine has a partial second of splutter but this is the only case so i do not do it.

i'd be checking that the go faster linkage is free along it's route to the IP first
 
First I'd check the alternator/PS pump/ A/C pump/water pump/belt tensioners and bearings etc aren't binding and that any drive belts are tight enough without being too tight.

Then I'd check the air inlet, air inlet pipes, intercooler and turbo inlet pipes, making sure they're not blocked, clean them out and that they're not collapsing internally and that the air filter is clean.

Then I'd check the sedimenter for blockages/jelly, then the diesel filter and pipes running to and from it.
 
Other things to consider. The vacuum pipe that controls the fuel delivery dependant on turbo boost can easily wear through where it runs past the front of the engine. sound's like some kind of fuel starvation and/or air inlet problem though. If all the hoses and plumbing is ok and the filters are clean there are a few adjustments that an be made to improve the low speed pick up but you've got to make sure everything is as it should be first.
 
sounds similar to a problem i had a while back, that turned out to be the pipe from the sedimenter ( the thing on the chassis at the back ) was broken and it was sucking in air, it was only found by pressurising the fuel line and searching underneath, the mechanic said it was just a very fine mist coming out, so i probably wouldn't have found it myself anyway, he replaced the whole thing and it's been fine since
 
thanks for all your info guys, i will be checking everything 2moro and over the weekend to see if i can sort it. i have noticed that the pipes on top of the sender unit on the tank are very very rusty and am told this could be the problem with little pin holes sucking in air ??
 
well guys i have replaced the fuel sender and the pump, and still nothing has changed, still having the problem. any other advice before i take it to the garage on tuesday
 
I'm having the same problem on my 1993 200tdi

No power at all until the turbo kicks in and it still feels lacking... it wants to stall if the revs are too low and you change gear... especially on a slope.

If you blip the throttle there is a noticable delay before the engine responds.

I'm about to change the lift pump and see if that helps.
I changed the fuel filter/air filter and cleaned out the manky sedimentor but there was no effect. The diaphragm is in good condition too.
 
I have heard that the fuel pipes can get restricted with some sort of bacterial jelly :eek: and that can cause low power/poor performance.
 
would that be the horrible white cr*p that was living in the sedimentor?

Wasn't sure what was worse... getting covered in diesel getting the bugger out, or discovering what was in it.
 
well so far i have cleaned the sedimenter changed all the filters, changed the lift pump and washed out the intercooler, still the same bloody problem, im takeing it to my mates garage on tuesday to sort it out, hopefully he'll blow out the pipes with his compressor.

The horrible white cr*p in the sedimentor is aluminium corrosion from the water actually sitting in the sedimentor. The bacterial jelly is usually known as diesel bug. Its a bacteria that lives in the tiny water droplets in the diesel and actually feeds on the diesel. It shows up as black snot in the filters and it will block the whole fuel system. If you have that problem then you will have all the problems of fuel starvation. i.e. progressively less and less power.
First thing I would look for is make sure that the idle stop on the IP hasn't wound itself out or broken off. Then the engines idle speed will drop below what it can sustain. Had the same problem on a Mitsubishi diesel in a boat.
 
hiya mate will check this, just one thing, i dont know what im looking for, wat is an idle stop and wat is an IP thing ?
