It is dead easy, but needs care.

Essentially you are going to ADVANCE the pump timing a little bit at a time, until it just "clatters" when you deck the throttle from tickover. Then you back it off one little bit so it just does NOT "clatter" when you deck it.
There are a few tricks, like be sure you slacken BOTH ends of the injector pipes every time, or you'll end up with a cracked one.
But once you get the hang of slackening the pump flange nuts and the pipes, and the bracket, you'll be able to do an adjust in 20 minutes or so.
In some cars it makes a HUGE difference.
You do know which way to rotate the pump to advance it, don't you?

ive tried to turn the pump clockwise looking from the front but the pump doesnt want to budge either way.it seems like the mounting holes are not allowing any adjustment at all! i loosened the injector pipes at both ends and also loosened the mounting bracket at the rear of pump.do i not have to adjust the pump from the front behind the inspection panel?my disco is a 300tdi manual if that makes any difference.

Scribe a clear line across the pump-engine casing joint so you know where you started and how far you have moved it.
Undo (loosen) everything. Don't undo the three flange nuts too far! One full turn (six flats) out should be enough, or half a turn more at most.
Take a rubber mallet and give the body of the pump a bit of a clonk near the back end. Don't mash the pump to bits! Just give it a bit of a bump.
Now try to rotate it. Pumps stick to the casing at the joint. The bump should loosen it.
ADVANCE is turning the top of the pump AWAY FROM the engine.

hi,1995 3ootdi manual with bosch pump. not sure on any numbers till tomoz but 100% certain that the pump cannot rotated unless its done from the front cover. behind the front cover is the main shaft nut and three small bolts that look like they could be adjusted but i could be wrong as i have never messed with these before!
if its cable , not fly by wire it would be similar to a 200 .it can only be changed from the front cover . the casting of the pump casing or block where it mounts too doesnt allow for "tapping" like on a ford or vauxhall it needs doing from the front cover you need to lock it up first then loosen the 3 small bolts in the cover remember to mark it before you start and adjust as you want . why bother tho if it runs okay ?

There's a mistake in it!
To ADVANCE the timing move the top of the pump AWAY from the engine. Turn the pump ANTI-clockwise looking from the front, the other way from the way the engine turns.
To RETARD the timing move the top of the pump TOWARDS the engine. Turn the pump CLOCKWISE looking from the front, the same way as the engine turns.
How can I edit the changes into the reference?

well i ve finally done it! advanced the pump and it wouldnt rev! backed it off a bit and is now running more crisp. engine sounds very smooth and no smoke. i will give it a blast tomoz and see what the mpg is like. thanks to everyone who helped especially CHARLESY with the excellent link!

Once you get it "just so" I think you will be very happy you took the trouble.
Problem with diesels fitted with injection pumps is this fine tuning. The factories don't have time for it. So they don't bother, and all engines get the "one setting suits all" treatment. One in ten might go nicely.
Engines with electronics are able to tune themselves more or less.
However, a TD5 with all its rubbishy electronics isn't that much better that a good 200 or 300 tdi, and at low revs the TD5 is WORSE to point of being dangerously short of power - like at a roundabout.
It's called progress.
