Boring question time lol ...

What are the socket and spanner sizes needed to work on a P reg 300tdi disco .

Just so i dont i dont have to buy an entire set , and can keep only the ones that i need , which would make it easy to carry on board the disco when out and about ..

Hey LB,

Hope you and B had a great Xmas and new year,

1/2 inch socket set, up to 19mm or 24mm
1/2 inch Breaker bar,
Spare wheel nut socket,
13mm bi hex 1/2 inch, calipers,
24mm 6 sided socket for Radius arms,
Spanner set open one end, ringed other from 6mm to 24mm,
Adjustable Spanner up to 32mm,

Most frequent on disco's are:
8mm,
10mm,
11mm,
13mm,
17mm,
19mm,

Just get any larger sockets that you think you may need like steering drop arm nut when you need them,

I got a spanner set from Ebay before I built my landy for about £48 they were guranteed for life similar to snap on i've had long tube over some of the spanners and me hanging on the bar trying to undo some bolts on an I beam bloody tough. Couldn't find them again tho when my uncle wanted a set.

I would recommend Halfrauds pro range quite expensive but tough and no quibble returns policy if they break. people will say others are better cheaper but I've always had draper pro range stuff. Jai

i got a small set of sockets with a 1/4" rackets from lidl made by stanley
the entire set in the box is about 4x8 inches and about 2 inchs deep
and a shifter for instances when the sockets arent deep eniugh i carry it in my glove box and it deals with most things on mi landies and was only £7
its a bit small fer some items i do in the garage but great for day to day bits and bobs and emergencys
ranges from 6mm to 19 mm

Sockets i recomend are a good set of 1/2" drive hex sockets the ones with the flat sides not bi-hex as you will round off the edges of the old rusty nuts. from 8mm to 24mm and a 27mm will help
1/2" 24"long braker bar or longer if you can get one
1/2" torque wrench will help
spanners from 6mm to 24 mm if you can afford it go for rachet spanners as the will help flexi heads much better.
3lb hammer
24-36oz ball pain hammer
a dead blow hammer or a hyde/copper faced hammer ( as heavy as you can afford)
chisles (a cheaep set of them from scerwfix is a good idea as you will abuse them)
WD40 or equivalent (lots of)
copper ease (pot of for when you refit the parts)
a viscous spanner sounds like a plan.

for the sockets and spanners i recomend the halfords pro stuff as its good value for money and if you brake them they will replace them with no quibbles so far
for good cheap spanners silverline do a crome efect set and they are hard seem to take quite a lot of abuse (i should know i work on the spanners)

A good inspection lamp i got r rechargeable led one from liddles last year for a tenner and it last for hours and gives off a good beam of light ideal for use where you cand get a cable lamp to.

a good multimeater its worth investing a few quid in one of these as you will need it.

download a rave cd as this is very indepth and a big help for your motor.

a haynes manual is a good investment for on the road wire diagrams are a bit scketchy sometimes

a good heavy duty jack and 3 tone axel stands as the landy one aint all that.

a grease gun is a must recomend a 500cc one as you can fit tubes of grease in, less mess and hassle.

i have invested in many tools over the years but i do recomend you buy good ones for your self as cheap ones let you down when you most need them.

if you buy ceap ones to get you going keep hold of them when toy replace them with better so that you can batter them with the hammer instead of you good ones (ware safty gogles when you do hit tham as the usualy shatter)

as for the bigger tools goto steam ralleys as they sell them there and to be honist some of the tools i have brought seem to last.

i said earlyer about silver line tools as a rule of thumb keep away from them as they are crap most of the silver line tolls wont last the 1st job you do or round off bolts.

you have got the best tool around and found a good site as these guys are willing to help you and give you advice when you get stuck.

also recomend you join a 4x4 club and get to know the pepole there as they have other tools they are willing to lend you if you need them as well as haveing someone close by to help you

Whatever size your toolkit is you will always find there is summit that you need but haven't got.

My landy is usually filled to the brim with tools and spares when off roading.

i use a 9mm-32mm socket and spanner set, couple of large hammers, a crack bar and a short piece of scaffold for them extra rusty bits an a big can of wd40 but always that lil thing you never have

Like ratty says you will never find a complete tool set its impossible! You don't wana carry loadsa stuff with you it will only rattle and get on your nerves and all the pointless weight will only make laning harder. I usually carry most of my tools just because thats where they live. I would recommend you to get a small socket set up to 19mm, spanner set up to 19mm and a breaker bar, mabe a wheel bearing set bearings seal socket chisel hammer and and leave it at that. On landys there is no real need for fandangled angled ratchet double ended wotsits just get some basic good quality spanners they cheap and strong perfect for purpose. When we are out there is somone that will have what you need. If not somone is only a phone call away dont go blowing £100's on tools to carry with you. If you need anything specific or special just shout you have my mobile and your not a million miles away I'll sort you out Jai.

Whats a crack bar?? Not sure but it sounds good to me!

I thought it was some new found drug. Wouldn't suggest trying to get high while offroading tho you might drop whatever you were trying to get high on.
