I have a 2000 v6 lpgd freelander. The fans do not seem to be coming on and it recently overheated. I believe the headgaskets are ok. I have just fitted a new thermostat and temp sender. Having put everything back in place ( the car was in the garage some three weeks )it will not turn over. Battery ok lights etc work just nothing when you turn the key. It is as if the immobiliser is on but fob works all the buttons as it should.
The only slight mishap I had was a slight short when when petrol sprayed onto one of the injector connectors. All fuses seem fine. I am at a loss as to what might be causing this. The car was left unlocked with a key in the ignition for several weeks. Any ideas please ?

check the ignition feed to the starter solonoid.

I have put a 12v test bulb between the solenoid lead and the battery earth and it lights when the ignition is turned. I presume it switches the earth. guess that this means its not the immobiliser. I can hear the relay switching. I take it that this means it must be the starter or the solenoid ? I cannot work that out as it was perfect before I did the work. Its only been stood 3 weeks. Could it be something to do with the autobox. Sorry i am no expert and I cannot afford to have it taken into a garage.

Try taking the connector of and putting it back on. It could just be a crap connection. Sometimes this will cure it.

The battery voltage is above 12.5 volts I take it?

If you are getting a loud 'clunk' from the engine bay when you attempt to start then I would suspect the starter solenoid contacts. Mine are melting slowly and I've had them out twice now. Keep pulsing the starter, you might find it suddenly lights up.

as it's an auto, have you disturbed any of the wiring onto the auto box that makes it think it's in drive, which would prevent starting

As you state the engine overheated before you did this work, it could be headgasket failure, one cylinder may be filled with coolant causing an
hydraulic lock. Take all the plugs out and try starting it again, if the engine turns over, you have an headgasket problem.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps. I have located the proble. It was the large diodefuse in the engine fusebox.

Well Done, for finding the problem AND for posting it. So many just disappear and you never find out what was causing it.
