Spreading Joy & Harmony
Well i decided to put a cd player in my 1987 90 defender as i have an hour each way to work and get very bored on the trip...so popped it in where the previous owner had removed one, obviously with an axle grinder and a blowtorch judging by the mess of plastic and wires...and off to work we go..happy!

Er no, grumpy, to continue the snow white characters...

Damn CD jumps terribly due to the vibration of the engine/road surface...

Now any ideas on how to maybe stop this? The unit fits nice and flush in the plastic holder that seems to be original so packing it in foam wont help...Or have i just got a cheap CD player thats never going to like being in a landrover?

Mark

even the cheapest crap cd player has a shock resistance built in unless you have a second hand broken one get your money back

have you mounted the unit directly to the bodywork or have you used rubber mounts? anti shock is exactly that.. anti shock.. it handles shocks... not vibrations.. so you need to reduce vibration hence the rubber mountings..

hmmm good point...its just resting in the stereo tray that i believe is an original landy part, its a snug fit...i may try fashioning some rubber supports to place in or around this somehow...

thinking about it mine is original LR one and is bolted straight into the tray.. the rubber mounts are inside the unit (I know this because I had to get a jammed disc out of it) so might be back to slim jim's answer...

I got fed up with my CD jumping so I had a closer look and discovered that the unit had an AUX input.
Plugged my iPod into that and now you could roll the car and it would not jump.
Also much easier to carry an iPod (or similar MP3 player) than 50 CDs.
Solid state is the way to go.

Most don't like being at 45 deg, some of the posh ones (like my old Sony) have a little screw you can turn if they are going to be mounted at an angle to level the laser but most don't. Get one that you can plug yer Aye-pod into!

There is also a setting an almost all in car CD players to set the amount of cache time for the CD. The cheap ones I got from Aldi have 15 or 45 seconds read ahead time so the CD never skips.
Having said that these cheap players also have SD card and USB slots so a cheap 2GB sd card and I have 30 odd albums to listen to.

I never got mine to work propelry - i binned it (well, sold it) and bought an MP3 cd player - im too cheap to buy an ipod, put 10 times normal amount onto one CD, sorted! If it gets scratched, oh no ill make another one.

Mine jumps badly, is fine when stationary. Ipod and lead is the way to go, just keep your eyes on the dam road! Those things are leathal...
