Thing is, if they're in the engine bay they're very sharp when cut off and catch your hands

Truth. You can get a special snips that avoids this. Or put up it with the blood.

Doubt it. Mind you, hard to start a TDI with a starting handle.....

True, but perfectly possible and also legal to convert them to coil springs, depending on exactly what has been changed.
