Hi i just removed the steering box of my Defe 2001 td5 crew cab 110 cause leaks. I disassembly it and took it to a defender specialist for rebuilt it as it had some corrosions. After he rebuild it he asked me from what car is as this steering box is from 200tdi he told me:( i never mentioned before the model of my car:) Now he told me not to put it back and to put a newer one as 300tdi and td5s are lighter… can you help me please if he is right? Here are some pictures:

I am happy to be corrected by other members more experienced than me as I am involved with the older end rather than the newer end. But it was my understanding that a 4 bolt box was a 4bolt box and they were the same from the very first defender right through until at least TD5, my experience with puma is even mor limited, but if they also have a 4bolt steering box then the same for them as well. I did not think there were different boxes for different models, you just had a three, four or 6 bolt box.

Old mechanic told me that td5 steering box and 300tdi have 3 bearings around the shaft. 200tdi does not
Like @dag019 I may stand corrected as my experience is with 200tdi 90 and D2’s, but I don’t see why a 300tdi box would be different and I don’t know what your mechanics point is regarding lighter 300tdi and TD5 🤔
