Hi, all.
After recently purchasing a 1972 series 3 88 perkins powered landy I've already run into problems, unsurprisingly.
Ran out of diesel a week ago going up a short hill, despite gauge showing half full.
Managed to put 7 gallons of fuel in, bleed system and get home where I realised fuel was dripping out from underneath car.
Checked tank (front under seat mounted), to find tank obviously now brimmed and leaking from sender gasket) despite gauge only showing just under 3/4.
I've ordered new cork gasket and checked wiring which gauge shows full when shorted.
Going to drive car until fuel in tank is used a bit more and then look into issue a bit more.
Question is, if tank holds 10 gallons and I ran out and put 7 gallons in that means I ran out with 3 gallons still in tank.
Thats a fair bit so does the pick up not extend to the bottom of tank or are there shorter versions that might of been fitted.
Just looking for some advice before fuel is low enough to take sender out and replace gasket and check sender and pick up.

It's a 10 gallon tank if i recall, that's about 45 litres

Just noticed my stupid mistake.
Original post should read 7 gallons and 3 gallons NOT litres.

If you can get the tank down to half, siphon and stick dip while you have sender out and then trial fit sender bending the arm to get gauge to read about right. Probably the best you will get.

I think the only answer is to look and measure, who knows what a previous owner has done

Perhaps a split in pick up pipe and when you went uphill this allowed it to suck in air

i have had my tank right down to a gallon and it still picked up fuel ok which i assumed was too low, yes 10 gal 45 l, i use litres here but a imp gal is 4.5 litres, a us gallon differs again with it being around 3.85litres.

you would have a leak and its allowing in air somewhere it could be even the fuel lines and not inside the tank. just check all lines id say, if its dirty try to degrease all fuel lines so its dry and oil free and if you get a leak then you found where the issue is.

what sort of perkins is in it... like a industrial/tractor type or the perkins prima that they had in those small sherpa vans??

Remove sender and dip the tank with a stick, compare reading to bottom of stand pipe, modify to suit.

Its a 2.0l perkins prima turbo diesel. Out of a montego I believe.
