Hey Guys, Have a series 3, v8 72. The starter was really tired when the engine got hot. Now it only clicks once and make quarter turn, then nothing.

Looking for an alternative to the Lucas 25701A starter motor I have. In my foolishness I ordered one for the RR classic 3.5 69-89 from autodoc. But it has the openenig for the teeth on the wrong sida...(

Located in the Nordics so the tax and delivery from the Uk almost doubles the prices. Cant u guys just join again, we like you a lot :)

Any ideas where I can get it from continental europe ?

Belive the previous owner reconded it, since it has new connection bolts . Found a cross conversion chart but its hard to know if they would fit.

To add , strangely nuff, it actually runs, when its pulled out from the motor. But I have no way of putting load on it. Mounted just one click and 1/4 turn..

Ill try running an extra positive cable directly to the starter in the w-e. I had a mouse living in the garage last winter. Didnt know they had copper on the menue. )

Maybe, but have cleaned batterypoles, earth to chassiconnection. Cleaned connection solenoid to starter etc.
Put a jump lead earth direct to the starter. Try that.

Some times the solinoid does not fully engage & give full load . These can be stripped down or replaced.

Starter motor.
Are you using a series box with an adapter plate? Are you using a v8 flywheel

Good idea, i did move the radiator with the earth lead just before it started acting up.

Dunno much about the box or motor, all parts look pretty factory to me. Havent had any major bits apart yet, but i guess its coming.

Its a Uk import (2002), the v8 sticker looks really cruddy, as if its been there a lot of years. Frame is fantastic, fully galvanized, think its been changed.
The car maybe. But people in the UK don’t put stickers on starter motors from Sweden 🤔.

I've fitted several V8's into Series over the years. The only differences I've seen with starters is the position of the solenoid. Range Rover/SD1 starters have the solenoid mounted to the side and MGB/Morgan V8's have the solenoid mounted below the starter, which can rub against the front prop when the axle is under full compression.
The 3.9 starters are of the geared type which are almost half the weight of the "older" models and crank much faster.
To the best of my knowledge all Rover V8 starters are interchangeable.
Here's a link to one from The Netherlands.

Dont think I can ask for anything, might have been 23 years he reconded it. 🙂 Not my city, to far anyways.

I wasnt saying you are "asking" for something. But you could send it to them to recon again, or they may know of somebody closer to you :).

Its "too far" yet you would order from the UK if it were not for the customs/duties issue 🤔.

Thank you great info. Ive however solved the matter today, by thanks to previous comments(thankyou) by running an extra earth cable from the pole to the block. It must have had poor connection to the frame. Starts like a scared rabbin. )

Thank you again, now I will spend the money for the starter on strawberries and beer. It is Midsummer! The start of the season.

Cheap fix then… Glad it’s all sorted
