On the heater box there are 6 rivets that are tight into the joint:

Its just too tight for the nose of the lazy tongs.

I have Googled a bit and not really turned up anything that looks like it with cope with this or a few spots where some 4.8mm rivets need to go elsewhere.

Anyone got a recommendation for tooling? Ideally something tested/used/abused in real life.

No chance, mine was used on the Ark, plenty to choose from on the ebay just pick one with a tapered nose.
