G'day gents, first time posting here, I have a very od grinding noise coming from the gear box/transfer case it's a 1995 300tdi 110 with a r380box and lt230 transfer box,
Car drives fine and shifts fine, if I'm at a stand still at the lights then put it into gear while holding the clutch it's fine!, but if I'm driving for example let's say I'm in second gear then apply the clutch and slow down to a stop whilst still holding the gear it will start grinding from the box area but if I take off it's like something re-engages and the grinding goes away!, any help would be hugely appreciated happy to answer any questions cheers

Hello mate, i'd put a good guess on it that it is your clutch release bearing getting worn and making the noise when pedal is depressed. Can be changed obviously but it is gearbox out for that one. Bit of a job but not the end of the world.

Can hold the clutch in for as long as I want if it's in neutral, or if I've come to a stop first then put the clutch in, also its a fairly load grinding noise that I can feel through the gearknob!

Yes mate, pretty much say its the bearing right enough. If you do get the box off replace your clutch at the same time, worth doing if you take the box off. If the flywheel looks a bit tired out then a re skim too while your there would be a good idea. If your going to do it do it all the way. Reliability is no worry then.

OK I'll probably be taking the box out this weekend, the clutch is only a year old and done about 35000km same as the bearing

No not driving with the diff lock on i can hear it disengage and engage so no issues there, and the clutch is a extreme outback heavy duty clutch about a year old including the release bearing

So you are not in the UK then ...

The issue with these HD clutches is that they 'pulse' the gearbox which rattles the synchro and highlights the inherrent slack in the (what is a complex) R380 gearbox. Normal (standard sprung) clutches absorb this effect between the drive member and friction plate.
You don't need an HD clutch, you've just fallen for a marketing ploy by an aftermarket reseller. Everyting rattles like a roses tin full of spanners. It's a 30 year old car with an engine designed 40 years ago.

These types of clutches allow you to delpoy sudden forces that are not good for the gearbox or the LT230 or indeed the rest of the transmission, it just wasn't designed for it.

If you put the transfer box into neutral and (pretend) to drive around, do the noises appear then ?
What does it sound like in 5th on tickover (ie just spinning the gearbox and 230 input shaft) ?
