I don't think so, it is the same tension I would have put on it previously with the old slider. But surely over tensioning would effect the bearings not the charging ability? It is still spinning and not making any noises.
I've used a crow bar to tension a belt, a long time ago.
The charge light came on when I started it up and went away when I subsequently slackened it off a bit.

I use a crowbar everytime! But I will try slackening it off and see if that makes a difference. Need to fix the injector pump leak first, but managed to get the o-ring needed today.

Well sickening the belt has not made a difference. On some closer inspection now the injector pump leak is solved and I can run the engine without dumping diesel everywhere the dash charge light does get dimmer with revs but does not go out. And the alternator may be a little noise at the rear. So maybe a rear bearing? I will investigate further when it is on the bench as I have ordered a replacement! If I get this one foxed it will can go on the engine fire 200tdi waiting to be rebuilt for the station wagon!

I think the size for alternator belt is 10mmx613mm does that sound about right?

Did you find what make you used? I am struggling to find a solid belt.
Packaging off the new belt & no name.. unusual for me.

Will have a look through some spares in the shed(Thursday night)
