I have a wet stain at the bottom of my rear diff. I wouldn't call it a leak yet... more of a wet patch that's clearly coming from the joint between the axle housing and the rear diff.
Can I fix this by just unbolting the diff, trying to open the crack a little, and smooshing some RTV in there, or do I have to do it properly. Taking the rear hubs and half-shafts out, props shaft off, and cleaning everything properly etc etc.
I'm at close to 170,000 miles..... is it worth looking at a new rear diff whilst I've got it all apart, or do they just work fine until they stop working fine?
It doesn't whine or anything like that (the front one does, but that isn't leaking) and is otherwise working well.
Ashcrofts want nearly £500 for a standard 24 spline 4 pin rear diff.

to reseal the diff you've got to break it free completely as they are a really good fit. My diffs have done over 260k miles and they are pretty robust as it goes.
