Help! My Defender 90 300Tdi (95 reg) has a bad habit - it smokes.

Lots of black smoke comes out of the exaust on any drive (an I mean quite a lot). At least its not blue or white (there has been no obvious loss of oil or water).

I've tried some Redex treatment to clean the injectors, but its not had any effect.

Does anyone know how I might try to stop the smoke?

Black smoke is usually unburnt fuel. chack your fuel pump and fuel mixture

Change yer air filter, or at least test it with no filter in. If the smokes gone without a filter in there, then buy a new filter and fit it. If it's the same, put the old filter back in.

Black smoke is incomplete combustion, so either a bit too much fuel being injected (usually after you've played with the injection pump to tweak a few more horses out of it and got it wrong) or there's not enough air getting in (this is where the blocked air filter comes in)

Very occasionally it's the induction piping breaking down... but more often than not it's because it's not been serviced properly ;)
