Because I thought it had to be level and raised, but looking into it I'm going to wait till tomorrow and get under it in the daylight and have a little look and see what happens :) I have a 5 month old baby I sometimes I can't get stuck into it

I am sure it does have to be level and either raised or you need a pit.
I have a funny feeling @Hippo made some clever little ramps for his. With your experience you'll know it can be both tricky and dangerous to put all 4 wheels off the ground using ramps and/or axle stands. Especially if the engine has to be running.:eek:.
and you may not have a piece of flat ground/drive to do it on.
do sympathise that having a baby makes all this even more difficult.;)

Don't forget to have the engine running otherwise it could puddle oil all over the floor... ;)
 
Can't 'elp worrying that no reverse is a well dodgy hint of summat serious.:(
Do we know if it's auto or not? Nothing on her profile..
 
It's an auto box yeah, and I had an hour to get under and look but stupidly expected little plastic clips for bellypanel and obviously not that straight forward, I removed 4 bolts out of 6 before I had to do school run!
 
Just to add, I had a c section few months ago and was difficult to keep sitting up and laying back down, praying my friend can come and help rather take it to a garage in defeat :(

Do understand.
As you know, with all these jobs, once you have done it once you will take the necessary tools with you under the car.
I carried the 3/8 drive bar and Torx bit in the door pocket and the ATF in a garden sprayer in the boot so I could top it up in about 10 minutes. Got the leak fixed now though. Good to hear you can actually get under it now! But there must be more room under my Disco 2 than there is under your Freelander. I'd never get under it with my gut!;)
 
Funnily I knew a lady called Lomax who had been in the military, but I don't think she had been in mechanix, before she left it all and became a teacher.
Can't remember her first name, might have been Vicky.:confused:

Ah see all meant to be, my reverse packed in to 're unite others my next step is to get some ramps, be able to take under panel off then level car again and check :) I will get this done, failing this would anyone be interested in buying a lander1

If you love the car, you may be able to find a secondhand box. I've rebuilt manuals but would not touch an auto.

Good point, but if she has ramps she could jack it up and then position them under it, in such a way that she could at least drive off them.;)
OR, she could drive it up them then use a jack to get it off at least one pair, then allow gravity to take her off the other pair, or a jack.;)
all it takes is a bit of ingenuity.:D
 
She will need a long reach jack to lift high enough to get the ramps from under the wheels. I know blocks of wood could used but it starts getting dodgy when you improvise with a jack

Loss of reverse on the FL1 jatco can be down to removing the wrong bolt. The one on the rear that looks like an oil level plug, isn't. It holds the reverse brake band in place. Remove said bolt and reverse is list. Putting the bolt back won't fix it.

Said brake band can also fail causing loss of or reverse. Also on a very small number of cars, low auto fluid has been found. Once topped up to the correct level, reverse came back. Bonkers as it should effect more owners with low fluid, but I've seen it a small number of times. Always worth a check.

Yer mechanic wants to change the auto as he finks it's broke'd and don't want to get involved. Giving you one option forces yer down that route. He may fink he's saving you. He may just want the bigger job of changing the box. Find another garage.
