You could just remove them. 
Some prefer the look without, But also depends on how easy you can get in and out (usually the other half). you could also you access ht which helps. But some say overworks the EAS systems so dont.
We have steps on both the P38 and 322 and M uses them to get in/out, I dont and if the car is not clean I just end up with a muddy mark on the back of me jeans.
Other than that loads of steps available to choose but I dont know we had LR 1s fitted.

Thanks. My concern, from the viewing last Sunday, was there was a small fist size lump of rubber attached to the rear edge of the steps(maybe the front edges too, can't remember) that was barely holding on because of corrosion. Does this rubber bit need attaching to aftermarket steps to complete the smooth lines or they look fine without? Island 4x4 pic is next to useless. Others on eBay look like defender ones, bit of bent tube with rubber on top. I'll have a good look at what's what when I get it back here.

They are just bolted to the front/rear of the step as a closer to the mud flap. They are just rubber no metal in them
Cheap steps probably wont include the mud flaps or closers so you will need to look around to get the nice line

Maybe I can fabricate new steel frames and fit the rubber bits to them. A good looksee is needed

Interesting,£255 posted and includes the rubber wangers too. The homemade SS ones look interesting too. I'll have to see if any of the rubbery bits are salvageable before I think of making some, if not I'll have to get the £255 ones. The beautiful lines shall not be compromised if I can help it.

I have side steps and they help with me having arthritis in both hips and having had a full knee replacement last year. Makes getting in and out for us old crocks a breeze
