i've now got a problem with the serpantine belt tensioner
sounds like somethink from war of the worlds:mad:
but what is the proper name for the serp belt coz i cant find it in hanes manual or landrover manual.
so can't find destructions to take it off or tourqe settings to put it back on.
thanx

Its easy, just get a long bar 1/2" drive. I think there is a square hole in the tensioner. Use the bar to take the tension off the belt and slide the belt off the tensioner pulley. Then use a 15mm (I think) socket to remove the tensioner.

Hi Nick, the tensioner is spring-loaded, so you don't need to take it off, you just put a correct-sized spanner on the tensioner wheel nut and turn anti-clockwise. You will feel the tension on the belt go down.

Once you've moved the tensioner out of the way, simply slip off the old belt and on with the new.

You may find it helps to remove the viscous fan assembly first - takes 30 secs IF you have the right tool !!:D

Incidently, if the problem is that you're are getting a screeching noise?? then a quick and cheap cure which often works (did for me!!) is to slip a penny piece between the tensioner assembly and the engine block at 9 'o clock.

Btw, this belt is also referred to as: the auxiliary belt, the alternator belt and other names that people have made up after skinning their knuckles!!

Cheers
Dave

Did this completely cure the squeeking?
I alway's thought it was the bearing that was nakered!!

I can only speak from personal experience.

I bought this TDi 300 with a squeak, checked the tensioner bearing, it was worn, and ordered a new one £4.95. Whilst waiting I also order a new Tensioner £40.

Whilst waiting for these to arrive, I thought I would try the penny trick - that was three months and 2500 mls - no more sqeaking/screeching.

Nothing more to say really - you know how to do this - right?

Mines not too bad, it seems to go through phases, at the minute it's ok. The next time it starts i reckon i might have ago.

Ye just stick 1p under the tensioner int it?

Yes, you slacken off the retaining bolt and slip it between the tensioner assy and the engine, on the left hand side at 9 'o clock.

Tighten the bolt and Bob truly is your uncle.

thanx lads:D
its not squeeling its just making a funny wearing noise like the bearings are buggered, or if you put a screwdriver on the fan blade when its spinning it sounds a bit like that,
tbh not sure now if its the tensioner or the alternator
did the long screw driver trick an the alternator is almost as loud as the tensioner:confused:
think i'll do the tensioner bearings first anyway coz thats the cheapest, then look into the alternator.
but thanx for the advise anyway

well fook me witha shtity stick!
my new belt tensioner bearing come today,£6 off fleabay, took me about an hour to take the old one out an fit the new one in, an guess what:confused:
the bastid still makes a noise like something from war of the worlds:mad:

so looks like its gotta be the alternator so another 90 quid spent on me baby,
thats from derbyshire landrover services, 70 quid cheaper than paddocks
wife calls it that fookin car, but its still me baby

think i might do the water pump while im at it for the sake of 20 quid, it might save another trip to paddocks:rolleyes:

You can take the alternator to bits and change the bearings if you feel brave!

when you say if you feel brave! does that mean its a bastid of a job?
or is it just a bit fiddly, an where could i get the parts? ebay for a guess;)

TBH I've never done one on a disco but I have done Lucas ACR type alternators. Basically a little bit fiddly but I suspect that the bearings will have a number on the outer race eg '6306' for example. If you manage to get them off with a puller then a good bearing supplier will probably sell you what you need relatively cheap. I recently fixed a washing machine witha spigot bearing from a Ford D truck and that was only £11. I guess it would be wise to know if a replacement alternator is available before you start in case it goes pear shaped.

Just had a look in the Haynes book and theres 2 types: Lucas A127 or Magnetti Marelli. The Lucas one looks quite straightforward not sure about the Itallian one!

If its the Lucas then This might help!

thanx rev you are a star:D
will check in the morning which it is an get it ordered (if it's the right one that is) never thought you could repair them,
thanx again mate
