what started as a clunk when reversing on full lock in my 2000 freelander turned out to be a total transmission replacement and over a week in the garage, new transfer box, viscous coupling, prop mounts and brake drums, now 1400 quid lighter in pocket!!!!!!!

Surely you must be mistaken?
Gaylanders are ultra reliable and never break down.
And on the rare occasion that they do, parts are really cheap - you can replace the whole transmission for 47p.

i am sure the temp sensor is on the inlet/return to the engine from the radiator. Am i wrong? Nope - nevva wrong - am I mistaken?

Other than the clunk did it drive quietly??

Sounds like a simple front diff mount was all that was needed.

I'm on original VCU and IRD at 115K. Diff mounts have been replaced as front was shot.
