my auto gearbox does not seem to be driving correctly.
I have changed the oil, which when it came out was jet black. I think the clutch plates are slipping as the car does not accelerate quickly and it struggles up hills. Are clutch platesa simple job I can do myself (fairly Proficient DIYER) or is it time for a recon gearbox..Is it a home mechanic type job?

Where can I get a recon gearbox from? The gearbox is off a '99 td5 2.5 diesel.

If your oil was that black then the gearbox may well have had it, or it might be a case of the wrong oil being in there in the first place and/or it has overheated.
You could try changing the filter screen within the gearbox, but this will mean draining the oil again and dropping the sump to do so.
Not a difficult job to do, you can get a kit which includes a new sump gasket, filter and 'O' rings for less than £20.
Be sure to keep everything meticulously clean when you do it as you don't want any crap finding its way into the valves within the gearbox.
If the gearbox is a harsh shifter, a shot of ZX1 additive (from Halfrauds) might help release any sticky valves, it worked on mine.

Hi there, my car is a harsh shifter between 1st & 2nd, so I was interested in what you said. Could you give me more details of this product, full name etc and how you used it to achieve these results.

With regard to me getting hold of some, I'm a bit far away from the nearest Halfrauds, so I'll need to get it mail order.

I was real cynical about ZX1 at first but tried it on the recommendation of a work colleague about six years ago.
At the time I ran a SAAB 900 turbo and adding it to the engine oil gave me almost 3mpg improvement by the second fillup after treatment.
It doesnt make alot of difference to the mpg of my 3.9 Disco as it gets driven hard on/off road and fuel economy varies so much as a result.
Now for the gearbox bit, I added 50ml of ZX1 through the dipstick tube thinking I had nothing to lose and over a few days I noticed that the shift was getting smoother. Its not perfect, but a huge improvement nonetheless, particularly for a 100,000 mile gearbox that I thought was on its way out.
Dont confuse it with Slick50 as there is no PTFE content.
I would also like to point out that I am not associated with ZX1 in any other way except as a satisfied user of the product.
Go to Team ZX1 or ZX1 Extralube

That's great Boomer, thanks for that. It's not a huge problem with the gearbox, but if I could improve the quality of gear change, well it would be just nicer you know??

Incidently, I was thinking about giviong the 'box an oil change, so what are the details on this kit you spoke of and where can I buy it please?

Most of the Land Rover parts specialists who stock it will list it as an 'auto box service kit'.
You will find some advertised on ebay as well.
Should cost no more than £20.
Make sure you get the correct grade of ATF oil, I think mine is ATF type D, yours may be different.
