Would be grateful for thoughts and advice on this one...ABS & ETC are both on. ABS pump appears OK although takes a little bit longer to go off after you switch on these days...ABS ECU has been swapped out for a new 'un to test it and no change !

Fault codes are showing voltage and sensor out of range faults but sensors have also been checked.

Local specialist thinks may have a wiring fault ... yep one of those hard to find ones...!

Any ideas, thoughts..ramblings on the subject gratefully rec'd !

These guys have always been pretty good and given me great service on everything else that I have ever needed 'em for..must admit I always try to be loyal to an outfit that has given me great service and sorted everything up to now.

Seems to be a lot of stuff on the net where Rangie owners have had enough of faults with the ABS & ETC and have adapted to run without. Would be very reluctant to do but any thoughts ?

Ok,if you really want to fix it do you have the fault list with the exact wording of the faults ? This is a reliable system if all is in place.But resistance checks as per LR's instructions are often not a conclusive test.Rear sensor faults are often down to wheel bearings being slack,but the front ones can be swivel bearings or cv joint carrier bearings - not wheel bearings.Other wiring issues are rare,ECU's bulletproof.Relay faults are more likely the cause of other faults as are blown brake bulbs and failed brake light swithes.
An oscilliscope is the real way to test wheel sensor outputs.

What about the valve block - do you know it failing?

I currently do not have ABS (1990 model without TC). The ECU tells about rear wheel sensor air gaps (both - hammered them down) and some valves in the valveblock (do not remember which ones, since it has been a long time since I read the codes).

The abs and etc has been removed from mine,the modules still there under the passenger seat and some kind of black metal ball on the drivers inner wing/strut mount.the rest of its gone.

Thanks folks...some really useful stuff here.

Fault codes where do I start...a dozen or so in total..everything from incorrect voltages at valve block to incorrect gaps (which were checked...reset..codes cleared but to no avail)..front wheel bearings were MOT recommendation and are being done while vehicle is in.

It was combination of codes that made garage initially think of ECU and then wiring problem.

Keen to stay with the ABS & ETC so will need to get all of the above stuff checked out.

I had something similar with my 93 classic, had all the codes which was saying faulty wheel sensor, but they were ok.
It turned out to be the control relay under the seat that controls the timing of the ABS pump. It goes wrong and can either not start up the pump, or runs it too long which then wrecks it.
I had a specialist.......insisted it was the solenoid block or sensors etc.

The front bearings wont help the ABS but its good they are being done,so what are the codes that reappear - remember you can still do the paperclip blink test on this system,it does not have to be done on Testbook.The valveblock on these cars is very reliable,but even if it does turn out faulty its not the end of the world.All of these parts are easy to come by now for a reasonable sum.(I was at my mates on thursday - he breaks LR's for a living,he had just bought in a 3.9 with ABS/TC which will get broken up in the next couple of weeks)
Its such a good system compared to the Disco 1 ABS,its worth trying to fix it.

Loads of stuff on the net on the ABS Valve & Pump relays needing to be replaced as throwing up incorrect or multiple messages about the ABS that proved to be wrong.

For the sake of very little money have asked for both to be replaced as need to be changed together, fault codes cleared and then see if this resolves problem or at least we get a more accurate pointer instead of a complete selection as we have now that could point to anything ABS related.

If Testbook doesn't help us at that point then its back as suggested to the paperclip test to see if Testbook is mucking us about (especially as it doesn't seem to like communicating with mine) and then it'll be borrowed or loaned known good parts.

The car has a lot of money spent on it..new rear axle...boot floor..plus all the usual suspects so will get the ABS/ETC back up and running eventually...i'll post again when the relays are in on any progress.

In the meantime folks...many many thanks for all the pointers and if anything else comes to mind please let me know...open to all information !

Testbook should have no problems at all in communicating with your car and will only read out the same codes as the paperclip method - only reason I mentioned it was that you can do the paperclip yourself,rather than paying for a Testbook session.Was it actually Testbook that was used or a different system - a couple of the atermarket ones do seem to have problems in pulling codes on these.

So what was it in the end then....?

Turns out that the bearing that sits in close proximity to the sensor on the front drivers wheel had started to disintegrate and had damaged the sensor.

Even after this was replaced however a number of fault codes were still appearing and couldn't be cleared.

So ABS/Valve relays were replaced, codes cleared and job is a goodun !

A bit of a road trip up and down the M6/42/40 and all OK.
