I would like to fit foglights in the bumper. The offside one will fit ok, but the nearside has the gearbox oil cooler behind it. It will fit in ok, but it will block the air off to the cooler.
Is there anyway I could get the air through with the light in. Fit a air scoop maybe?
2001 P38 2.5 Bordeaux auto.
 
The oil cooler was the reason auto diesel auto never had fog lights, to get the same airflow as the grill it would have to be quite a big scoop that will probably have to stick out under the bumper and spoil the look, unless you cut a grill in under the fogs.
 
Some people just love looking for trouble, the oil cooler is there for a reason and the P38 Fog lights are useless.
If you really want fog lights, fit some after market LED units.
 
Fog lamps should not be fitted to diesel autos according to Land Rover. But can be on models before 1999 as long as the N/S bumper cover is ventilated. But are more problematic on 1999 and on models because of the fan fitted to those models.
 
If it is peculiarly a no-no just for diesels why is the diesel different from the petrol model? Is it a different gearbox/oil-cooler?
Not being argumentative, just puzzled as to why the difference/distinction.

I just think the lamps look smart in the bumper. It looks like I shall just to have one.

Diesel autos have an oil cooler behind the N/S lamp position. Fitting a lamp blocks air flow to the cooler.

The difference is the petrol`s don't have a great big intercooler in front of the rad where they have the box oil cooler.
 
Ahhhh..... OK, now I get it. Its the additional Intercooler stuff that displaces the gearbox oil cooler. Not being Diesel-savvy I was missing that bit. Ta! @brianp38dse

The manual diesel has the gearbox oil cooler in the rad the automatic diesel has the gearbox oil cooler behind the N/S fog lamp position.

One is illegal.
 
They're quite useful on dark lanes in the countryside. I fitted them to my manual and they do help on murky nights. Look snazzy too. :)

Look rubbish IMO and there are no lanes darker than where I live and they do very little.
 
Sorry you feel that way, but I think they look better than the blank and air intake. I had them on my other p38 and they were not fantastic but they were ok
 
They are fog lamps not driving lamps and are supposed to beam light under the fog with the headlamps off to define road boundaries. They are not designed to light the road ahead for any great distance.

Do they work without the headlamps on dip?
 
That's why I have two 8" Land Rover spotlights fitted to the bullbar, you don't need any others when you switch them on.
But your right they are no good in fog.
