[Disco Divette]

Hi

Getting new car TOMORROW (2002 Disco ES Auto - CAN'T WAIT ) and it doesn't have a tow bar (how ridiculous ) so I got a quote from a mobile fitting man ... £250.

Then I looked on e-bay and I can get an A1 towbar for about £80 delivered plus a few £££s for the electrics and ball thingy-ma-jig. But I don't know if that's a good make, so checked for Witter ones, again I can buy it for under £150 with all the bits.

Dare I attempt to fit it myself?? Have you done it, are you a mechanical genius, how hard is it??? Have searched this time (thank you Charles and realise I'd need an able assistant!)

Probably worth mentioning here that while I can diagnose / identify / etc all sorts of things with a horse, I can just about manage to put fuel in my car (Oh god, how embarrassing!!!! )

Maybe I should see if a local garage can do it for a few £££s instead

Its only 4 bolts for the bar, and 4 screws to undo the off side rear light to locate the electric plug for the bar, need someone to give you a hand unless you have a tree stump to prop it up with as I did.

Otherwise known as a 'mechanical reversing sensor'. They are very easy to fit although the electrics can be tricky.

Try Land Rover Freelander Towbars from Towsure, you'll get the right electrics from them as well.

The correct trailer electrics are dead easy to fit.

Take off right rear light unit.

Get a string with a small weight on the end and drop down through where light was till it shows under the corner of the car.

Fit socket to plate and feed cable with plug on the end up high and over to the right, then attach plug to string and gently pull it up to light unit.

Fit plug to socket already there.

Replace rear light unit.

Attach a few cable ties here and there to keep cable up and safe.


Job Done.

5/ stand back and watch man fit things asking loads of girly questions while he does so.

Yup. Piece of cake. I did mine in a couple of hours. It'll probably wreck your "departure angle" (and plough a furrow) though. Before my Disco, I fitted a towbar to a 3-series BMW which was a complete nightmare by comparison... You'll need a big torque wrench, as from memory the large niuts/bolts need over 120nm torque (supposedly!)...
