I was curious if the OP (AFS1) ever found out if the light came on if coolant was low.
If so which light came on. I know that the kit that was available for pre 4A chassis numbers put the MIL on if coolant was low.
If the post 4A chassis also put the MIL on. Why did LR bother putting the lamp in the Ipack.

Apologies to Nodge68 for not providing an update. Yes, the red/black cables with connector by the drivers side steering wheel was the correct connector and when all connected up, the light (looks like a factory chimney) on the dashboard lit up (on the right hand dial as you sit in the car, at about 10:00 o'clock) . This goes out when the car starts, like all the other warnings. Presume the previous keeper had disconnected and hidden this connector, as there was an HG issue and water was being lost. New HG later and reconnected connector and all's well. Interestingly though, the handbook with the 2005 car doesn't have this described or shows the warning light. however, manual published 2004, so not so surprising. has anyone a 2005+ handbook for a Freelander 1 facelift that shows this? Thanks again for everyones responses.

Low Engine Coolant Level Warning Indicator
The low engine coolant level warning indicator is illuminated on receipt of a medium speed CAN bus signal from the CJB when the vehicle is in power mode 6. The signal originates in the ECM, which transmits the signal to the CJB over the high speed CAN bus.
When the vehicle enters power mode 6, the amber low engine coolant level warning indicator is illuminated for a 3 second bulb check. If the warning indicator remains illuminated after this period, the engine cooling system should be checked for leaks and topped up as necessary.

Yes I know this is the eml but it's not this one, The light I have on is an eml with an exclamation mark inside it.

It'll be a sensor giving an incorrect signal to the EDC. You're best getting the codes read to pinpoint the problem. The usual suspects are the rail sensor, MAF sensor or MAP sensor but the vac actuators can cause it too.

According to the handbook: - Engine Malfunction - Amber Illuminates briefly when the starter switch is turned to position II. If it remains on, or illuminates at any other time, the engine management system requires attention. Stop the vehicle as soon as safety permits and switch off the engine for at least 30 seconds. If the light illuminates again after the engine is restarted, it is permissible to continue driving (with reduced engine power), but qualified assistance must be sought as soon as possible, to prevent potential engine damage.
