Cheers, found this one. Hass any one tried fitting this to a freelander 1? Tried to contact seller but they dont take emails or calls which is concerning.

Thanks, that's kind of what I was thinking. The mounts supplied would not without gutters, but the width with span my rails and I can fix with u bolts.

Good point. I could look at designing my own if I am doing that, I have a handy brother-in-law that can weld.

I made my own as all I could get at the time was one that was only half

Whilst standing in the Chinkie this evening waiting for me dinner I was looking at the roof rails on the Freelander. The area that you can bolt a rack to is probably shorter than 3'. The rails are also right at the front of the car stopping a long way short of the back of the car.
The rack linked to above is said to be 6' long. The front bit of it appears to be just for spot lights and the storage area starts behind that. So unless the spot light area is mounted so that it is over the windscreen, the rack will extend a lot further back than the rails and be unsupported. I think that not only will it look odd, it will also not be very stable with much weight in in, especially if the weight is toward the back.

Thanks Guys, I think making my own will be the way to go. I agree the current bars are not sufficient support for a full rack and would look odd.
teddywood1 do you have a pic f your bespoke rack and how it's mounted to the roof? Did you have to add additional mount points to the rear?

Here is mine I did this one for my old freelander 14 years ago I did want one of the g4 ones but could not find one and I wish I had built one but now I can not be bothered as my hands get very painful .old age

The G4 Challenge rack mounts to the standard roof bar mount points. I'm sure it has more mounts at the rear, but are well hidden once it's fitted.

I admire anyone who can turn their hand to making a good roof rack - but the ones like that G4 which follow the roof contours of the Freelander are the dog's whatzits
There's a fella I'm friends with on Faceache built himself one for his L Series that follows the roof contours - its looks bloody good.

Thanks guys, some nice ideas there for me to look at. The G4 are nice but that's a lot of bending. Maybe if I make one I could potentially sell some, looks like they are pretty tough to find.
Did find this image on the forum, looks nicely done and the back had some rubber supports which is a neat idea for the rear load.

I might get the son in law around and teach him a bit then he can build me one and by the way it cost me £30 to have it plastic coated I did not think that was bad.

Passing skills on is always a good plan. I might be a little blessed on the coating, brother in law has a powder coat facility at the office, but I am not entirely sure the max size it can take! Having said that the plastic coat ontop would make is super resilient

Once you have seen the G4 rack in the flesh, so to speak. Everything else just looks wrong on the FL1 imo. The way it's tight against the roof, following the contours exactly, just looks so good. I nearly bought a FL1 with a manual box, simply because it had the G4 rack fitted. Sadly I couldn't convince the bean counter to allow me to buy the car so I could "liberate" the rack, before selling the car on for a bit less money. So I'm still looking for a G4 rack that doesn't cost silly money.
