I have a disco 1 and it struggled to start this morning. Was slow and took a few times before it fired. Sounded on the brink of not starting and dying completely. The battery is 2 years old and is 70ah 620cca. I commute about 1 mile to work so it doesn' get a run. But put the charger on it and within a few minutes it said fully charged.

So , are you asking if (edit) WE think it requires a new battery? or if your battery is right for the job? or is it a case of drive the D1 to charge the battery properly?

If you lived closer I'd got a spare one you could have borrowed. If your battery is from halfords or similar they have a warranty so just take it back and swap it.

All of the above really. I think new battery but as it' not a genuine one I wanted to know what you recommend for a d1. It' an offroader. It came with the car so I have no receipts etc...

Dunt need a receipt for halfords ones as they date the side of the battery. I recently bought a discovery with a knackered halfords battery and they swapped it for a brand new one as it wouldn't hold charge

Being "an offroader" as you say should have very little to do with the battery, the level of charge and the length of time it's left in a discharged condition does.
As the other members have said, if it's inside the warranty period from Halfords, then take it back. They will have a chart (they've got charts for everything) to help make the correct selection from their range for your vehicle.
Your local indie garage should have the kit to carry out a discharge or drop test on it for you which should show the real situation with the battery.

Halfords charts as I understood it were a little dodgy for some LR vehicles. Or maybe it was eurocarparts??

Marmaduke must have clouded the issue by talking about Halfords batteries, so I committed the cardinal sin of assuming!

I have found these guys tend to have correct specs for batteries including the size, ( but do double check ).

this is what they recommend for size and power.

But first , I would do as @brian47 says and get it tested, Halfords may do this FOC. Plus, whatever happens, take it for a good run and get it charged up on a regular basis.

I'd suggest, as above, that some testing is in order - alternator output, and drop test on the battery as a bare minimum - do, or get these tests done, and report back - or nip to halfrauds and they may do them for you if they reckon you're parting with some piccies of the Queen...

The correct battery casing form for a 300 Tdi D1 is an 072 - you want the highest energy density you can get - but this costs.... I saw a recommendation on the Tayna site a bit ago for a 65Ah 420 CCA battery - IMHO this has not got enough urge in it - it might just about last the two year warranty period... We're currently running GM(OEM) ( I.E. Varta) 072's which are 84Ah and 750 CCA - they are very effective indeed

Edit - As per Neilly's post above - that is a decent battery - but is "officially" the wrong way round , being an 069 - your call as to whether any aftermarket mods, or standard equipment on your D1 would make it harder to fit with the terminals that way round....

Oh dear here we go... 069 and 072 have the same case size.
The link above for the Enduroline battery is the correct one for the D1, as for the terminals being the wrong way round, well the positive will be on the right hand side and at the rear of the battery when reversed and not installed as per the picture.

Well there you go, I thought the 300tdi D1 had the battery with the battery negative post on the outside edge at the rear of the battery.

Are you sure the 072 and 069 have posts in different orientations?

some try running 400W lights off a 65A Alternator . Can yu get an 072/069 for less than £ 79.95 inc. VAT?

Both... when correctly installed will have their terminals at the rear and neg left, pos right just like the day when they left the factory as in established traditions of the early RR.
