What's the opinion on fitting the diesel sump gasket? Bit of Hylomar Blue either side or just fit the gasket and bolt it up?

Bit of Hylomar Blue either side sounds good as it will also help to hold in place, mind I am thinking old school a lot of newer motors its a rubber gasket no sealer to be used.

Sounds like an old fashioned gasket....hylomar would be my go to.

Sump gasket is metal with bonded on rubber seal. You need sealant across the two areas where the front cover meets the block and the two areas where the rear main oil seal housing joins the block. The sump is a pig of a thing to get back on and into position over the oil pickup. The chassis needs to be lifted and the axle virtually hung to make room to get sump off and back on.

be careful when putting the 2 back bolts in as they go into the rear main seal housing which is aliminium and thread can easily be stripped

another trick i use to position the gasket is to thread a piece of cotton though 1 hole either side of the block and tie the gasket in place and when you get a couple of bolts started with the holes lined up cut the cotton and fit the rest of the bolts loosely before the final tighten. This way you stand a better chance of not damaging the gasket when trying to get the sump in position and don't forget to put dipstick in before you fill with oil.

noticed it doesn't leak for long after switching off. So, either heat or pressure. Wouldn't think heat would cool down that fast so thinking maybe a little pressure in the sump? So blocked breather?

Mine's the '95 so breather goes out of rocker cover into a leaking horrible plastic filter thingy then back into the air intake. No EGR.

after it has been switched off all the oil has drained back into the sump the oil level is below the sump gasket. are you shur its not the O rings on the cooler hoses?

Should be a slight vacuum in the crank case when engine is running. Maybe that leaky horrible plastic filter thingy, otherwise known as a constant depression valve, is knackered or needs a good clean out. STC2806 but not a pretty price from Landrover. Maybe you would like to remove the cam cover and clean out the oil separator.

Yep but it is above the dipstick hole.

RAVE says you need to "fill the front and rear openings with STC3373 sealant" before fitting the gasket. I'd make sure Hylomar is up to the job. You might need Permatex or something else a bit more robust.

STC 3373 is of course very expensive.

Hylomar is the best sealant on the face of the planet. Developed for metal to metal joints on Rolls Royce jet engines. Applied correctly is as good as it gets.

Yeah, my clutch still slips a bit around max torque in higher gears so I have a suspicion that might be leaking already. I've been putting off dropping the box and to be honest I just don't have time at the moment. Too much going on elsewhere to do major surgery on the car.

@kds / @wammers : is it possible that a leaking rear crank seal could put pressure in the gearbox and cause that to chuck oil out too? Just remembering all that gearbox oil I had down the side of my (manual) box and couldn't work out why it would push out the top.

No.

Crank seal will only leak into bell housing and drip out, if your crank seal was stolen and the bell housing tightly sealed up AND input shaft seal also stolen then yes, it may pressurise your g/box a tad.
