My quick search tells me that there's something called a parking pawl which engages with the output shaft therefor providing a mechanical lock, it's possible the pawl is worn... Unfortunately. :(

My instinctive reaction would be (a) auto-boxes are expensive & (b) what else doesn't work?
I'm sure more helpful advice will be forthcoming from knowledgeable members shortly ;)

its a K Reg, ZF with b&w transfer box

teh box has a hairline crack that i'm told weeps a little on long journeys,

It might not be the gear, hoping it its the lever hta engages it, tend to break when people engage park when the cars still moving,

could be worse, the netural switch isnt obtainable anymore, alas i know someone at special vehicles that has a few end of line parts :)

failing that, a recon box from ashcroft is £900 with a surcharge, so not all bad,

Car also needs a new interior and finding someone thats got one breaking seems quite hard atm round my way

The main concern is the condition of the shell as corrosion is often rampant & with the interior out for replacement it's a good time to check everywhere for the worm. The chassis is generally much better than a series/defender, but check the rear cross-member, sills & body mounts.

chassis has been compeletely redone, just needs under sealing
That's a good start, now for the shell - starting from the front: inner wings, bulkhead, floor pans, bottoms of A & B posts, inner sills (structural) rear inner wings/seat belt lower mounts, boot floor - the list goes on. If it has a sun-roof be especially vigilant due to possible blocked drain tubes (both front & rear corners) stained headlining is a give-away.

sun roof doesnt close propperly, the run to lift it to the seal is jammed/doesnt raise, currently jammed it up with Card board,
