Odd one here. I've never noticed it before, but in heavy M25 traffic on Friday, with lots of stop start, I noticed that after three brake applications in a short time I had no servo power at all.

I also noticed that there seemed to be a lot of turbo lag. Over a second.

(Freelander 1 TD4 auto).

Is this normal? Or have I some kind of inlet leak or something?

Dunno Freelanders, but it sounds like a vacuum pipe split, or a vacuum pump issue ..

Brakes shouldn't do that, mine doesn't and it's an auto.
Check all the vacuum pipes, especially on the servo.

+1 definitely sounds like a leak ! - spent quite a while tracking down a leak on mine.

usually it is the vacuum pipe that goes over the auto gear box that wears on it as it comes out of the vacuum chamber onto the gearbox look there first

The 'leaky pipe' seems the most likely explanation. But how much pipe is there?

You can buy a roll of silicone vac hose off ebay and the likes of.
Just swap everything you can get your hands on.

There is a cam shaft driven vacuum pump as there's no manifold depression on a diesel engine.
You'll need about 3 metres of 3.2mm vacuum piping. This is available in lots of places.

Hmm. Its not that simple. First of all there is a sort of rubber grommet to seal the pipe into the servo unit. That looks a bit sad.

Then there is some kind of non return valve and two other bits of pipe going off to the vacuum pump, some sort of finned plastic box and what is probably a turbo solenoid or some such.

It actually all looks in good shape except the sort of grommetty thing that goes into the servo itself.

The "what's this" is the vacuum accumulator.
The "where's this go" connects to the vacuum accumulator.

Also, @Nodge68 - thanks for mentioning the reservoir - I just ordered my TD4 Servo / MC / Fuild reservoir assembly but completely forgot about the Vacuum Reservoir (you did mention it to me before as well )
My ' salvage man' in the UK is now sending me one...

dunno. There's a hose with cloth braid on it just this side of the non return valve that disappears down to the depths of the front of the engine. I meant to label that 'where does this go' because it was obvious where the other hose went - to the plastic box thing!

Damned car needs an MOT so I may just let the garage sort this one out.

Mmm. Significantly worse today after me fiddling with the pipes. Suggests its something pipe or seal related. Ordered a grommet as the cheapest thing to replace and the most damaged looking.

I'll let y'all know how that goes.

Could be, not unheard of.

Also seeing the vacuum accumulator reminds me of a couple of threads where this was found to have perished and hairline cracks were found.
It is fiddly getting to the hoses, but don't forget the engine tray comes off and gives more access.

OK, took the old hippo in for its MOT and of course they tagged the brakes, so the garage mucked around, pulled of the inlet ducting and found a cracked vacuum pipe going off to the turbo solenoid.

They fixed that with a bit of new pipe. Should see the old gal out.

IN the photos that was the bit of braided pipe coming off the non return valve, that I never labelled
