I have a 1997 p38 diesel whilst driving to work today I lost all power and had lots of dark grey to black smoke coming out of the exhaust wouldn't go above 10mph and after 5 min it would go to 2thou revs then just pump smoke again anyideas please I was thinking possible pipe or turbo but couldn't really see anything oils are ok that was as much as I could check

Black smoke is unburnt fuel.....

Given that air is a constant in a diesel engine, if you get black smoke it is either massive overfueling or air restriction....

Turbo pipes are a good place to start.....loose or delaminated inside causing restriction. Then look at a blocked intercooler, clogged air filter etc.

I like your thinking. Has the turbo pipe popped off?

Turbo pipe coming off should not give what he has, engine will run quite happily with a turbo pipe off. Lower power but run never the less. Lack of air for some reason would be what to look for.

so the consensus is prob a pipe of or damaged did notice my mpg dropped from 20 to 11mpg and stunk of diesel

Black smoke is running rich so either restriction in the air inlet or its injecting far too much fuel.

White smoke I unburnt fuel.

General basic rule which is correct most of the time

Think i may have just found the problem
