Wammers !!Hi, just got back from working away so back into the garage, stripped front cover off timed up , pics included these are taken with flywheel locking pin in place, so , could I have gotten flywheel back onto engine in wrong place as I had to use all my ancilleries to this engine. Reason for asking that is I believe crank woodruff key should be at 3 oclock by looking at bottom pic its not at 3 more like 2, another problem has occured it now wont communicate with my nanocom, in tank pump is constantly running ( pulled fuse) has the main ecm died?????

Also. I trust when rebuilding with the chain on, you didn't rotate the engine backwards as this can cause the chains to slip and jump.

That is not correct, you cannot have the timing pin engaged in the flywheel. The key way should be at quarter past. Mark on crank sprocket should be fully engaged on a bright link and pump sprocket mark should be just about to leave a bright link. You will have it hooked on the first timing pip 40 degrees before TDC. There are two timing pips to determine TDC for the ECU one 40 degrees BTDC and one 20 degrees ATDC. You MUST have the pin fully engaged in the flywheel so that engine cannot turn in either direction. Timed like that the point of injection will be far to advanced and the cam shaft will be miles out. I would like to see a photo of where the cam is with the engine set like that.

Hi, sorry guys but the pin is right in flywheel it wont turn either way, this is one of the reasonsI asked about locating flywheel on crank. a, should there be a dowel to locate flywheel, b, if not could I have it a bolt out, giving me the pics you see, camshaft is not fitted at moment.blown fuse appears to be fault with comms and nanocom

If you remove crank sprocket and pump sprocket and chain you should see a mark on the oil pump case. With locking pin in flywheel this mark should be in line with woodruff key. Key sitting at quarter past the hour. Then refit sprockets and chain with pop marks on sprockets lined up with bright links. Then you can time the camshaft, reassemble front cover then time pump. Make sure cam is done properly with tool, 4.61 mm spacer to inlet side if old chains and cam lobes sitting flat across engine.

Hi, the f**kin saga continus!!, engine out after checking crank woodruff key and mark on casing, pin wouldnnt go in. Pics show what Ive found, flywheel was doweled in place, Ive tippexed points to highlight, crank key and mark on case.flywheel locating pin highlighted, flywheel has 2 white marks lower is pin upper is pin hole,3rd pic shows dowel hole and lower white dot is where pin is and circled is pin hole... So is there any chance of different flywheels for different years, doubt crank has twisted it turns far to easy, flywheel was on original engine that ran,( just has loads of piston slap,)there appears to be approx 2" difference between pin/hole with no1 at tdc and crank in position shown in pics..... HELP>>>>>> please.

Something wrong somewhere no idea about other flywheels for that engine. Part number for flywheel is STC3354. Lock pin hole is lined up with crank position sensor for some reason. Timing pips don't look right either. Is that your original flywheel or the one that came with new engine?

My fuel pump ran all the time when the diodes in the top of my alternator gave out.

Hi Wammers , yep original flywheel of old engine,

Sorry then mate don't have a clue. You have a real problem with this one. Was the old engine original and what is the new one from. Flywheel doesn't look right, according to Land rover there should be a sensor pip 40 degrees BTDC and one 20 degrees ATDC. Your flywheel does not appear to have them. Bit of an enigma.

That's a bit of a mystery! I replied to a post in which it said the fuel pump was running all the time among other things! Ah, yes, see post #21.

Right got you see what you were on about now. One thing is for sure here when he took photos in post #21 crank locking pin could not possibly have been engaged properly in fly wheel as he said. It must have been in the large hole seen in the photos of the flywheel. The engine MUST have been movable back and forth and not locked solid as i asked him. If you look at photos of fly wheel next timing pip should be 20 degrees before CPS that is not the case. Looks like he has flywheel assembled in the wrong place one bolt out. With woodruff key aligned with mark on oil pump lock pin should go into flywheel.

HI, re your reply "he cant have had pin in properly", I appreciate you dont know my mechanical abilities, but trust me the pin was located in post 21, its impossible to get flywheel in wrong place as its doweled and dowel was/is in place. This engine has had one of the local independants mechanics come down and help me check things over, the last photos are with crankshaft woodruff key set as informed by Wammers, I dont want to offend any one but to assume some people are thick and dont know one end ofa spanner from the other isnt what I thought this forum and its more experienced members is about, thanks for all your help any way.

Sorry but it cannot have been, with the woodruff key lined with mark on oil pump in your second set of photos the locking pin hole is still well above the locking pin. With the locking pin correctly engaged the woodruff key would have been at around twenty past on your first set of photos. With the engine in, in your first set of photos with the woodruff key at ten past the locking pin cannot possibly have been in the lock pin hole in the flywheel. Put the lock pin in the flywheel and look where the woodruff key ends up. Sorry but a don't believe you, it cannot have been in the locking pin location in the flywheel it is not possible. Unless the crank has snapped and is flopping around like a whippets dick.

That's a point, with the flywheel pinned is there any movement at the front of the crank. What was the engine out of ? and have you tried the flywheel off that engine ? It's not that your not being believed it just should not be possible.:)

Hi, sorry for delay in replying, working away has its downfalls. these pics hopefully will prove what I have been saying about this particular engine, just because you havent come across it before dosent mean it cant happen,
