Bought a plug in 12V kettle, plugged it in, after 10 mins water in kettle was luke warm and lighter plug was melting and filling the motor with the smell of burning plastic.

Me lighter plug and extension lead is well knackered although the socket seems ok and is still working.

I am now lead to believe that the Freelander socket is 12V and 10 AMP, is this the case for most cars as I have just discovered that the kettle is 15 amp and useless.

are most cars 10 amp for the lighter socket or just land rovers

Just looked in me Haynes manual for 1997-2001 gaylanders and it reckons it should be a 20 amp fuse. If yer's is younger, then I can't help

Thanks for that, mine is a 2004, I have one of those little plastic covers that replaces the cigar lighter.

It says Aux power 12V 10 Amp, this was given to me by a chap on the spares counter at the local land rover stealer.

Mind you knowing them it could have been for any old motor.

If it were 20 amps would it cause the plug to melt on the 15 amp kettle lead?

There I was coffee mug in hand waiting for me first brew from the new kettle and all I got was a smell of burning plastic

Well I am a photographer and I do a lot of work in Scotland and every year I do a 2 week tour of Scotland with me camera kits. (bit of a busmans holiday really) but it is my chance to photograph scenes, buildings, or anything else that will make a good print to sell to the americans (they love this stuff) without having to fit in work for anybody else.

Well it is normally just me and the current Mrs Kergan so we have a gaz stove and whistle kettle, but this year I am taking me Mum and Dad as well so that's 4 brews instead of 2 so I thought I might get a second way of heating the water for a cuppa instead of 2 of us waiting 1/2 hr for a hot drink when we stop for a lunchtime feed.

You see this is me being the kind soul I am. My Mum and Dad have both been forced to give up work, dad 3 years ago with a virus that damaged his heart muscle and Mum this year went and had 2 heart attacks within 2 weeks.

So they ain't had a holiday for a few years and can't really afford one, I however had a very busy year so I have decided to treat them to 2 weeks in Scotland, and i'm picking up the tab.

If yer not campin', then why don't ye ask the landlord/lady or hotel if they could fill ye a flask of hot water? Just make sure it's a big flask

I do quite a bit around the Dumfries area, I was in stayed in Castle Douglas back in March, and did some scene stills work on BBC's 2000 acres of skye at Portpatrick.

They do deserve a break as they have had a very stressful couple of years, I think this is what caused Mum's problems.

Nope, I don't often get to see the actors and filming, I would take the shots when they look for a location.

I did however party with some of the actors in Monarch Of The Glen in Kingussie when they were filming at Laggon and Newtonmore in the Highlands

No. Fact that it is rated at 20 amps means it can supply up to 20 amps, not that it will always supply 20 amps. The fuse is rated at 20 amps, in reality will blow a little higher (only slightly), but the cabling will be rated higher than the fuse. So the fuse will always blow before the cabling starts to get warm and then cause a fire. That's why you should never fit a higher rated fuse if one blows.

Quite agree with ye Longdog, gonna do that for me lampin' sessions and there's less chance of it fallin' or pullin' out. One of me mates had a 3 pin plug and socket wired into where his fag lighter was, it worked a treat
