I thought this was a bodge patch but have seen similar on other Defenders. If it is meant to there, what is it and how do I get one that ain't fooked and oxidised through?

It is meant to be there, it is part of the tub cap pings. Having said that it is basically a piece of plate which you could replace

As fitted at factory. Have a look in the parts book and order to part number.

It is one part of the cappings, there are different parts to make up th whole capping, they just pop rivet on to the body.
Series had em galvanised, think you can get them too if you want, or just remove, sand, and paint again if you want to save money,

It will come out if you drill out the pop rivets. Use the old one as a template for a replacement.

Just riveted on, so should come out easily enough.
As said, have a look through the parts book for the part number and you can order from that.
