I have actually wondered before in a moment of boredom if it would be possible to make a series chassis out of wood.

I am not thinking about doing it myself as I don't have any experience or knowledge of woodworking, I simply wondered.

Lots of older cars had wooden chassis ....

not sure the off-road thing would work well though ..

There's no reason that it shouldn't - laminated structures are incredibly strong.
