a mix of very black and grey, a head gasket wouldn't produce the noises this was making

Worn out big ends or mains will give low oil pressure and knocking

also, check your oil level and smell it

what age engine and did this come on gradually?

it's the original engine as far as I know '87 had noticed it a bit smokey the last time I drove it but today went to collect a bike and made it about a mile it started getting really noisy and I had to turn round crawled back in 2nd belching smoke

I'd suspect piston damage = noise and smoke. Shot big ends = noise but no smoke, ditto main bearings.

sigh, pretty terminal anyways I had been hoping to upgrade the engine but now I will have to! bugger, it's going to be in sick bay for some time!
