Hey up folks

300 tdi EDC auto discovery

Starts alright from cold. Runs fine.

When warm, it will intermittently not start. Other times it will be absolutely fine and fire on the first turn.

When it's being awkward it won't start, continued cranking doesn't give a hint of firing. No white smoke so don't think it's injecting any juice.

No red lights from immobiliser

Suspected sticky stop solenoid, but changed that and no difference.

Friend tells me the EDC pump is same as VP37 pump on the bmw m51 on p38 etc. with the same hot start issue as the P38 suffers from. Next step is trying to pop the coolant sensor wire off and see if it starts well then. Annoyingly it only does it intermittently so hard to know for sure.

Anyone had similar?

I have never had a problem with my 1998 300tdi ES auto with EDC not starting whether it is hot or cold.

DISCODAD

Well that'll help him.
And I don't know I'd be tempting fate like that

If you read the actual last couple of lines that state

"Friend tells me the EDC pump is same as VP37 pump on the bmw m51 on p38 etc. with the same hot start issue as the P38 suffers from. Next step is trying to pop the coolant sensor wire off and see if it starts well then. Annoyingly it only does it intermittently so hard to know for sure.

I in fact did answer that there is not a hot start problem with EDC pump in my car, as his friend implies, is typical of that fuel pump

Where as you DISCODAD did NOT add any value or any useful information at all.

Perhaps as a previous owner you could add information about the starting ability of your EDC pump fuelled car.

As a long time owner of EDC fuelled Discos and having many friends who have had that type of car can confirm that Hot starting is NOT an issue of that Fuel pump.

THEFLYINGVEGETABLE

The fault could be a dodgy /dirty/loose electrical connection between the ignition switch and the stop solenoid,

Possibly a fuel evaporation / air leak problem, or dirt in the fuel tank / fuel lift pump, / sedimenter that is blocking fuel flow

Now thats more helpful than your first comment :clap2:

@Theflyingvegetable,
I'm not sure what could be causing your issue.
Johnthan's second reply may highlight where the issue could be.

Giving it more thought the only thing I would add, would be the EGR should be closed on a cold start and could be staying open on a hot start.
Longshot, but its a cheap fix to blank it and your engine should run cleaner.

Good luck with it.

This has never had an EGR in my ownership, useless things!

Also now noticed if I try to start it (and fail), wait 5-10 seconds then it will start.

Stop solenoid, I think it is wired from the ECU, not from the key like on a classic diesel, I'm yet to sort a tell tale light on the solenoid itself.

Fuelling, I'm pretty sure it's getting fed well, cold starting is fine. Running is fine. Sedimenter is not fitted, I cleaned the tank out. Put a new sender unit in, and redid all the lines from front to back. Lift pump is recent and pumping well.

Admittedly the petrol I winterise my bio with might be evaporating, but that wouldn't explain the very intermittent problem that also happens on pump diesel.
