Ok here's the problem I am having with my 1997 p38 4.0 SE RR. I Drove to town, filled up with fuel, made about 4 stops before arriving home, 20 min. Later tried to start it, and it would crank over and sputter, then shut off. after trying to start it a few more times, no luck and no fuel pressure, all the fuses/relays are good. When I put a meter to the power supply of the fuel pump I have connectivity, but it will not read 5 v, only -VDC. IS IT THE FUEL PUMP OR SOMETHING ELSE, and the inertia switch was not engaged. Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

Welcome to LZ, lost traveler.

You should be able to hear the fuel pump running after you turn the key to the "run" position. I can hear mine from the driver's seat, but you may have to get under the car near the fuel tank and listen for it while a helper turns the key. If you can hear the pump, then the next place to look is the fuel filter.

There is no noise from the fuel pump, when I put the key in the number two position.
It sounds like it's the pump then. No pun intended. If you are inclined, you could check for the condition of the wires coming into the fuel pump housing and see if you can spot a aged wire that's cracked or corroded and repair it, or you could just replace the pump.

I'm not sure if it is the fuel pump, or a sensor of some sort, but I know it's not the fuses or the fuel pump relay.

I am now going to encourage you to show us your moxie by going to the "Introduce Yourself" section of our world and allow yourself to introduce yourself.

If you've just put fuel in it did you run it empty? Could a simple filter change do the trick? Worth trying as it's so cheap? Also if your tank is over 1/2 full doesn't the fuel flow via gravity? My pump went on the A1 up to Newcastle and I got it home by keeping the tank full (had to stop like 5 times to put a tenner in lol)

Just some ideas to think about :)

That only applies to diesel models, petrol needs the pump to run.
