Hi all. Does anyone know the rough cost of a total colour change re-spray of a disco 1??

depends what finish you want, but a car as in a little thing for a reasonable job is around £1500...

you could roller/brush it yourself, or buy a compressor and learn..i did my own, not perfect but does the job

As said, it depends if you're paying someone or doing it yourself, even if you are paying someone prices can vary massively depending on how good of a job you want.

I bought a spray gun and did mine myself, I'm now in the process of painting my 4th one, albeit mine have been 90's but still the same principle.
A few people have asked me about paint when they have seen mine that's been done in a pokey little garage, and I always tell people the same, give it a bash.

It might seem daunting now, but it really isn't hard, most of the work is in the prep.
And those who do actually give it a go, have said it wasn't as hard as they thought it would be and have had good results.

Cheers for replies. I'm always happy to get stuck in and give anything ago (like when I bought a MIG and got stuck in welding new boot floor in for first) only problem I have is NO GARAGE :( just a shared parking area so I don't know if my neighbours would appreciate a passive colour change......

I suppose I could hire a workshop or something for a week to do it?

I did mine in a gazebo on my front garden.
Fair to say now I've done more than one the neighbours don't like me, but if I can do something my self theirs no chance I'm paying someone.

Cheaper and more satisfaction in doing it yourself, but if you've no where to do it then it comes down to what somewhere to do it would cost to rent and whether it's worth it or not.

if you didn't have the gazebo, they'd really hate you and their blue washing :D

Snigger :D
To be fair I did the first two in the gazebo, then they complained I was running a business so I did the rest in the garage as it's more air tight and not so many fumes go wafting about and they can't see me :p

Price will also vary on the product your using!
If your using a single pack product like a synthetic or cellulose, then it would be cheaper,
But if your using a two pack product it would be more money but a lot more resistant to scratches and wear!
Then you also get different quality in those types also.
We use Glasurit two pack paint at work that cost £130 a litre before the cost of the hardener etc and that's discounted 60% off trade.
Not that I would recommend you using it spraying in the open air, or your neighbours would really love you as they wouldn't be able to get it off!!

I used celly on my first one, don't get me wrong it was ok, but once I used 2k I realised it was miles better.
I use 2k at home, obviously not just willy nilly outside, try and do it in the garage/shed and try to keep it to a minimum.

I hope your wearing an airfed mask then as its cancer genic!
I've seen to many people who have been spraying 2k paint over the years that now can hardly breath because they have knackered there lungs.
A new cartridge mask will only last about 10 minutes before the 2k will coat the carbon so it won't work anymore.
Take care when using, we only spray in a properly built oven.
But then I am fortunate enough that I can use the welders or the oven if I need to after work or weekend.
But then i'm working on cars all bloody week so I have to have some advantages!

Erm... nope  Lucky if I wear a mask at all to be honest.
I'm aware of the heath consequences hence why I used celly the first time around.
My thoughts where it's not like I'm doing it day in day out.
When I do do it, it's one or two panels at a time, so I'm not in their long either.
So what a painter does in a year would take me 50 years to do.
Don't get me wrong I'm a pillock for not wearing a mask at all.
And air fed is a no go, I've only just got enough room for the compressor I've got, never mind another or a bigger one.

I was looking to get mine sprayed when it's back on the road, local small one man band came up with €1500 (£1150) if I were to help with prepping or €1700 if I just drop it off wth the keys, fancy a deep gloss black but Audi have a nice metallic grey I like too.

Stornoway grey is a crackin' colour ... IMHO :D

My mates td5 hard top 90 is in the paint shop now getting painted Stornoway grey with gloss black roof and chequer plate kit . it was on eBay a few months ago and was multi coloured 2 inch lift boost alloys and 255 85 16 bfg mt's 60mm spacers . think he got it from leeds

If its an old cheap Disco I would hand paint it, local place mixed me some Nato Green brush on paint and couple of matt black spray cans, cost about £50, looked good even after 5 years when we sold it.
Use a good quality gloss roller and a quality 2" brush, I was surprised how well it came out
