Hi all

I was driving to local shop when my 2002 l322 4.4 v8 range rover decided It no longer wanted to change gear (has done this a few times now). I eased off and eventually the next gear was selected. when I pulled away from the shop to head back the Trans fail safe message appeared (annoying)

on getting back I got the all comms out of the glove box and the fault I got back was ''Gear switch fault General fault''.

I have searched the web but cant find anything on this fault.

The millage is 89000 (just hope its not needing a new box spent enough recently)

Any info would be great as I have a 30mile trip home at the end of the week don't want to be stranded on my way home

Possibly be the selector switch mounted on the side of the box....

It is mounted externally and can be vulnerable to damp and damage!

I have cleared the fault, will I be able to drive 30miles home even if failsafe pops back up?

Is the selector switch know as a XYZ switch? Also do you know how i can test?

If failsafe pops up, the box will lock into either 3rd or 4th gear!

Yes, the selector switch is the XYZ Switch also known as the inhibit switch, as for testing....I attach a logic diagram and wiring schematic...now I am not 100% sure which is L1, L2 etc....but in my eyes, the green (0.75) wire is the common and the other 4 number C1452-1 to -4 are the L1, L2 etc wires....

Unfortunately, there is no connector diagram in RAVE for this connector strangely!

You just need to bear in mind that the switch connection sequence diagram shown in RAVE is incorrect :

So here is where I'm at with my problem. I drove 30miles home without any problems. I removed the xyz switch the next day and all was good. After putting back together I went a drive and all was working as it should until the next day, when driving up a hill the box wont shift up when on the flat but put over to sports mode and I was able to go through the gears with no problems.

This is an old thread but i'll give it a go and see if anyone can shed some light.
I have a 2002 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 L322. It belonged to my brother in law who passed away and I decided to keep the car, mostly because it was his car.
I've had it for about a month now.
It shows an intermittent "Trans Failsafe Switch" - Switching the car off and on clears the problem and once it's gone it behaves normally.
I took it to the mechanic and used the portable machine and he said that the fault popping up was the Gear Switch.
He cleared the fault and said for me to continue to drive and see if it would come again.
It did come again and now is happening more often, it's been 2 weeks since I first took it to the mechanic.
I'll take it back to him this Friday - but he says he never saw a XYZ switch going bad in 36 years of experience, so he needs to do some proper diagnostics, and that most likely this is the gear box itself.

I just wondered has had it before and what was the outcome, and possible costs of such a repair.

Any comments are much appreciated.

Then your mechanic's customers have been very lucky.....or he is mis-informed.

The XYZ switch mounted external on both the ZF4 and ZF5 boxes are known for having issues with damage or damp ingress, the GM5 box less so as it is mounted internally in the box.

I would suggest ensuring the switch works as per Bembles post above - and I would very strongly suggest you google both the names Bemble and RRPhil (as it is the same chap) as he is the de-facto genius of the ZF boxes - more so than ZF themselves - he earns a living stripping these boxes, repairing them and supplying parts to the industry and consumers for the ZF boxes....take his word as the gospel it truly is.

Now I am not suggesting the XYZ switch is the fault, but would assume it to be the most likely given the fault logged - or indeed the wiring or connections in the line.

Yes I read through Bemble's posts and it makes sense, particularly because the car wasn't really used for possibly an year or more.
I also agree with you, it seems like a part that could be easily affected by most and dump.
I'll try and contact him... see what I do and then post the outcome here.

Hi,

I'm looking for a mechanic or knowledgeble person in London or Surrey who'd be able to replace a XYZ solenoid (UHB500020) switch on a Range Rover 2002 4.4 V8.
The mechanic I took the car to will only fit original Land Rover parts which cot £565 + Labor.
I got the part second hand with warranty for £165.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
